The house brett flaw at Cayron is such a bummer; I really like this stuff. But the 99 is able to power through, a mix of peanut, spritz, and aged merde, it's still highly drinkable. They need to clean it up, though - stuff from before about 97 is just so good.

I remember visiting them in 03 and they greeted us with a smirk and limited tolerance; a real shame for the package they potentially have put together.

This used to be one of my favorites. I at least try it every year. I have not liked any vintage since 00 or 01. For a lot of Gigondas, it's been a dry spell between 01 and 07. For whatever reason, neither 05 or 06 was great there and 03 and 04 were also so, so, even for favorites of mine like Gour de Chaule, Trignon and Raspail Ay, so maybe that's the reason with Cayron. We'll see. Raspail Ay is great in 07. I haven't tasted the others yet. A lot of Gigondas that I don't have much history with have put out 07s that I like.
 
I was just looking at my 01s last night, but decided to give them another year or two; the last vintage I had of his wines seemed to take forever to open up.

I'm partial to Cosme's regular bottling, FWIW. Though he seems a bit polished for the region. I've never had the Valbelle.

I was smitten by St. Cosme for awhile. I can still drink a bottle with pleasure. But I never think of the wine as calling for any attention from me.

I've tasted the Valbelle. It does call for my attention, but not in any way I like. There are oaked Gigondas that I like despite myself. The upper cuvee of Moulin la Gardette (although, as with other Gigondas, not after 2001) is an example. Valbelle isn't.
 
Had the 2000 Cayron last weekend and it was in a happy place, but it gave no indication that it was going to improve to any great extent. It was just a big ol' softball of ripe fruit with some structure and funk in the undergrowth. The brett didn't bug me much, but I like the swarthy stuff.

Gigondas is a chronic underperformer, no doubt about that. That plus more infected than most parts of the southern Rhone with the oak luxe cuvee deal. I tend to gravitate toward producers like St. Damien and Bouissiere, which can be really outstanding.

For me optimal drinking for Gigondas varies with the year, soft years around 12 and more structured years maybe 15-16. I would have held this 99 but was glad I opened it because the brett is killing it fast.

But Cayron in particular has a serious brett infection going that is ruining the wine. There's brett, and then there's active brett. When I open a bottle and smell the peanuts and get a lot of spritz I know it's just going to be a problem...

It's too bad, because the 99 was an incredible bottle when it was released.

So that's all to say I'm done with them!
 
Going to have the 1995 Cayron tonight since it's my daughter's 14th birthday.
Previous bottles out of this case have been very nice.
