just opened. dusty nose elements. lots of tannin, but well integrated and SWEET as hell. love sweet tannins! really nice beginning.

more to come...

just opened the billiot cuvee julie nv, disgorged june 07 i believe. a little oxidized, but not in an annoying way. on the nose, caramel, ginger ale, candied ginger, white chocolate? on the palate; acidity is still alive; dry, rounded minerality; orange rind. decadent, louis the sun king kinda wine. a bit too much dosage for my taste. but, i ain't complainin'...

next, 04 bitouzet prieur bourgogne rouge. not without its pleasure, but the pleasure is in highly limited quantity. past its prime, cook with it.

back to the 02 clape. dustiness remains, much to my pleasure. on its own, the wine has a lot to offer, but the food opens it up completely. very fatty boneless blade roast of pork, sage rosemary garlic chicken stock, very fatty, and the tannin just became one with the dish. the whole was much greater than the parts. but i must say, the pork was fantastic!!!

Clape is amazingly regular. I know all the vintages back to 1976, and 1997 is the only one I haven't liked. 2002 was a challenging vintage in the Northern Rhne, but nowhere near the disaster that it was in the Southern Rhne.

Hmmm. I bought some 05 recently, placing my bets on Rosenthal and the vintage.
