Didn't anyone check these guys for box cutters?

That was also funny.

Boy, funny stuff from VLM and BK in the same day. That almost never happens.

I'm usually funny, but you sometimes miss it amidst bouts of over-serious consternation.

I'm opening a 1996 CFE tomorrow night. I hope it's prematurely oxidized just for fun.

Last one I had was prematurely opened, not prematurely oxidized. But the simian peloton can't be stopped, I guess.

You are mistaking me for someone else. I've never claimed premature oxidation for these wines. In fact, I have said the problem is overstated and often confused with other flaws.

It's Jay Miller & BK who claim "pre-mox".

Not intending to imply anything.

Good to know we agree on the premox. I think I've said before - I think it's the wine equivalent of TMJ - aka, the diagnosis for whatever ails you, whatever the symptoms. Who is BK? the clown with the crown?

I figured your peloton was equipped with corkscrews, though - not yellow premox hankies.

So Thor you try and rile up, but me you're polite with (relative to your normal comportment of course)?
You write better than Nathan. The result's more grammatically satisfying.

I doubt Nathan assents to this and since he's the one making the invidious distinction, I find the explanation, though highly complimentary, somehow not likely. Thanks though.

On the question of Borgs and souls: eee, eee, eee, I can't hear you.

Jonathan, if you need help, I'll chip in that my 11th grade English teacher upbraided me for saying "try and..." It's "try to."

Was it screwcapped?

Nope, but it was tired. Actually it was an odd mix of way too young and tired, thus making me think that it was damaged by mediocre handling at some point in its life. The other bad bottle (a while back) was from the same source, so probably a degree of heat damage - enough to cause early senility if not death.

I am hesitant to join this conversation, so I will simply lob out the fact that I opened a 1990 CFE VT last Sunday dinner that was absolutely singing. No signs of either premox or heat damage. And there were two witnesses. I would note, to avoid accusations of POM-dependence, that this particular bottle of this particular brand of this particular wine was purchased at Maureen's suggestion. I understand she beats up the winemaker if the wine is prematurely oxidized.

Did you here the joke about the 11th grade English teacher who arrived at the pearly gates. St. Peter asked who it was and the teacher answered, "It is I."

"Another one of those damned English teachers. You know where you can go."

Nevertheless, your teacher was right.

No, Chris, I beat up the person who claims I beat up the winemaker.

But let me just say this - I bought numerous bottles of the 1990 CFE, in both halves and fulls, when it was first released and have opened said bottles periodically over the years. Initally, it was totally delicious and I refilled immediately. Then it shut down hard - I waited many years to begin opening them again but a half bottle opened 5 years ago took forever in the glass to appeal (but appeal it did) so I knew I just had to be more patient. By this winter, I was rewarded as a bottle I opened when Louis Michel Liger-Belair and Peter Wasserman were at my house was totally amazing! My cellartracker notes say "focused, lush, structured, aromatic, balanced." Then I opened my last bottle (sob!) for Rahsaan, his wife, Cole and Bob just before Rahsaan moved from DC and I think I speak for all of us in reporting that it too was also outstanding and delicious.

So while I can't speak to Brad's particular bottle or other bottles some have opened that didn't appeal, I can tell you that well-stored bottles of this wine merely needed time to reveal the wine's greatness. I did have one corked bottle, however.

Oh, and the 90 CFE VT has always been just a terrific, terrific wine that never really shut down and I've gone through at least two cases of it since its release - I did experience a couple of corked bottles (sorry, David, we can try again) and somehow managed to break three (!) but the juice has always been delicious when untainted by TCA.

Finally, Chris' bottle was recently purchased at macarthurs, which acquired it from the local distributor, which acquired it from C&E's warehouse, where it had been stashed under old newspapers or something so those idiots didn't realize it was there. I think there's more if you are interested.

Indeed. I can't even begin to get into all the CFE CSH minutae that the more devoted fans seem to enjoy. But that bottle was lovely and neither advanced nor premoxed. Far from it. It was a treat!
