White Weekend

2004 Nigl Grner Veltliner Privat
Lovely lovely. Much nicer than the 04 GV Alte Reben I opened a few weeks ago and also shows much more poise than the last bottle of this from a few months ago. But that was in a restaurant and this bottle was from home. So now I have time to pay attention to the firm rich oily texture (am tempted to talk about hazelnut oil with orange zest flavoring and white chocolate for body in the middle), the peppery mineral underpinning and then all the delicate florals dancing on top. Not quite mind-blowing and not incredibly complex but great suave texture and very expansive flavor-wise in the mouth, so this gets all of my respect tonight. Bravo.

2001 Maximin Grnhuser Herrenberg Sptlese
Typical Grnhaus flavor profile with verdant cucumbers, herbs, flowers, and some earthy spices. All of that is fine. There is also the brisk refreshingness underneath. But for the most part this is dominated by the overlay of round slightly dullish fruit on top, which is still a bit too round and dull for me to get very excited. Not bad now, but I am guessing/hoping that this will all become more harmonious with time.

2003 J.J. Prm Graacher Himmelreich Sptlese
Speaks too much of the vintage for me. There are some lacy Prm elements to the body and a bit of sulfur kick, but for the most part the fruit flavors are showing too ripe for the structure. I enjoyed drinking it for a bit because of the sugar and minerals, but I did not finish the bottle. Maybe it will all come together in the 22nd century?

2003 J.J. Prm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Sptlese
This starts out worse than the Graacher. Which is to say it shows even sweeter and with more burnished sugar. With air it redeems itself and shows more compact and poised structure than the GH, if one were feeling fanciful one might even say it hinted towards the integrated and regal elements it can attain so marvelously in other vintages. But for the most part, here too the fruit flavors are showing too ripe for the structure. I enjoyed drinking it for a bit because of the sugar and minerals, but I did not finish the bottle. Maybe it will all come together in the 22nd century?

That is too bad about the Prum. I was thinking of getting some 2003s in order to try them out. Might do it anyway just to experience it, even if it is not Prum at its best.

I'm guessing the 2002s are better or are they shut down right now?

I don't know if they are shut down. Many 02s are opening up but then Prm is often on the slow side. But they should be a good purchase even if some of them end up in your cooling unit.

I think the '03 Prms are just starting to come round at the Kabinett level - tightening up, now showing primary fruit. '02s for me are still closed. This from a big tasting in July.

So that means you would be optimistic about future developments for these 03 Sptlese wines? I don't have much other experience with them in 03, but other people say the wines have always been awkward.

Two different things at work here:

1. Prm's consistency and track record, especially with trickier vintages like 2000 and 2003

2. I think 2003 is unfairly maligned (and I was one of those who thought it an off vintage at release), and one that will show better in time. I can't make the '59 comparison as I didn't taste them young, but I know that Manfred Prm does, and my guess is that these wines will hit a lower but longer plateau than some of the more acid-driven vintages recently (e.g. 2004). Look at how the '82s are drinking now - the chemical analyses are similar (as a rough guide), with higher dry extract (sugar and otherwise) in 2003.

'Seems to be an echo in here.

Indeed.

Just like the echo in my apartment when drinking both of the wines!
