Irouleguy.

Whoa. Where has this been all my life? It's like the quiet girl from Chinon got back from a summer in Spain and now she's got a tan and there's a look in her eye and her hips swing when she walks and all the boys just don't know quite what to do.

I had the 2005 Domaine Ilarria rouge to be specific.

Also, how do you pronounce this?

My friend Damon would like to meet her.

Somehow Chinon doesn't have the same ring as Ipanema... Does paint a lovely image though.

You should try the Irouleguy Whites. I like them even better than the reds. I haven't had a bunch of different ones but the Ilori Irouleguy white from Dom. Brana is smokin' good.

Yay Irouleguy!

Try the Etxegaraya Cuvee Lehengoa -- that's the best Irouleguy I've had. A few other disorderlies would likely agree. The Arretxea rouge is really good, too; I like both better than the Ilarria. Brana's whites are very nice, and the Arretxea "Hegoxuri" white is pretty thrilling if you're an acid freak.

Me too!

It's also still the only Irouleguy I've tasted. When am I going to do something about that?

(redacted: Hey where did you find this, etc. It turns out the spelling is Ilarria).

As noted, the Ilarria is a Charles Neal selection, and K&L in San Francisco frequently carries it. The Arretxea is a Kermit Lynch wine, as is the Etxegaraya.

Had the '00 Ilarria Bixintxo tonight (looks like something Bizarro Superman would drink): earthy and rustic, but less than a hip shaking experience. I need to do some more Tannat exploring.

Zachary, I bought it at Sam's a few years back. It didn't need decanting, but I did give it an hour or so of air in the bottle. Any new oak has integrated.

Just had the 2006 Arretxea Iroulguy "Hegoxuri" tonight - yum!

Wow! This is really good. Seawatery/minerally nose, lean honeyed fruit on the palate, excellent body, and terrific acidity without being the over-the-top acid bomb that the 2005 is. Not just your typical Gros Manseng-Petit Manseng-Petit Courbu blend (Ikiriota-Ikiriota Itipia-Xuri Zerrati for you Basque speakers).
