What is going on Thursday evening, Oct. 29th?

So, I had a fascinating and lengthy discussion with the importer today about the story behind the '47 Chinato. He said they made a vintage Chinato in 1947. End of story.

There you go.

Hey, I may be in town on the 29th...

That's great.

I don't know if you heard, but we are planning a series called "0.125 Days of Natural Wine Matured in Anfora/Amphora" for that evening.

Maybe you could participate.

Well that nicely ties up the lingering questions about vineyard sources, doesn't it?

Thanks.

Which .005th of a day do I get?

In honor of Cory Cartwright's somewhat vague and hesitant interest in the upcoming Anfora by the Hudson the Orange Wine Gathering Society (OWGS) would like to take this opportunity to announce that the 2001 Gravner "Anfora" Ribolla has been acquired for the dinner.

That's right. Every single Anfora wine from Gravner that has been released will be represented.

To recap, here is what will be playing on the Big Screen during the Anfora Moving Picture Festival:

2001 Gravner Anfora "Breg"
2002 Gravner Anfora "Breg"
2003 Gravner Anfora "Breg"
2001 Gravner Anfora Ribolla Gialla
2002 Gravner Anfora Ribolla Gialla
2003 Gravner Anfora Ribolla Gialla
2005 Vodopivec Vitovska "Orange Stripe" (Amphora)
2005 Castello di Lispida "Amphora"
2006 COS "Pithos" (Amphora)
2006 Guttarolo "Anfora" Primitivo
2007 Guttarolo "Anfora" Primitivo

Which is to say, a lot of my favorite wines will be open on the 29th at the 'viv.

If you have an interest, you should come.

If somebody else has an interest, maybe they should come.

If you or somebody else has another vintage of one of these wines that they would like to share, they or you should definitely come, preferrably with that wine.

And now for those in our audience who may be in need of assistance, we present the previous message again, with closed captioning provided for by the Anfora Farmers of America "Anfora, it's what America Grows".

[these two happenings actually have very little to do with each other]

That's right. Every single Anfora wine from Gravner that has been released will be represented. [the sole member and active participant of the OWGS is very OCD and couldn't do this event, or sleep nights, without a complete set of vintages]

To recap, here is what will be playing on the Big Screen during the Anfora Moving Picture Festival: [some people seemed confused about what were are going to be doing, probably because of Kane's babbling about Chinato, so let's review]

2001 Gravner Anfora "Breg"
2002 Gravner Anfora "Breg"
2003 Gravner Anfora "Breg"
2001 Gravner Anfora Ribolla Gialla
2002 Gravner Anfora Ribolla Gialla
2003 Gravner Anfora Ribolla Gialla
2005 Vodopivec Vitovska "Orange Stripe" (Amphora)
2005 Castello di Lispida "Amphora"
2006 COS "Pithos" (Amphora)
2006 Guttarolo "Anfora" Primitivo
2007 Guttarolo "Anfora" Primitivo

Which is to say, a lot of my favorite wines will be open on the 29th at the 'viv. [dude, come 'on, that's some amazing vino AND all next to each other real nice so you can really get a handle on the subject]

If you have an interest, you should come. [If you don't have an interest, you are an idiot. If you do have an interest, I mean, again, come 'on, that's some amazing vino, and what the hell else could be so important on an early Thursday evening??]

If somebody else has an interest, maybe they should come. [Dude, if you still don't jones on it, that's cool, live and let live. Other people will come, no biggie. The forces of Orange are strong.]

If you or somebody else has another vintage of one of these wines that they would like to share, they or you should definitely come, preferrably with that wine. [Everybody likes wine. Everybody likes more wine. You want to be liked, right? Sure, everyone wants to be liked. Except maybe the VLM. Maybe.]

I also don't know how Brad knows the one he drank was from '47 when it's an NV production.

Because in '05 Dressner brought a little bit into the market and I got a bottle. Date is hand-written in pen on the label. Maybe we need to mention Dressner in the same breath as Rodenstock?

Fwiw, this was the title of an entry Joe made to his blog on 10-06-05, so maybe he can tell the story?

"1947 Barolo Chinato from Teobaldo Cappellano to be Showcased at Louis/Dressner October 19th Tasting!
Actually, his father made this wine."

I tasted it. I can resoundingly state that it was of the era.

[Reuters News Break]

There are rumors coming across the Anfora Wire that the COS winery of Sicily will begin maturing all of their wines in clay Anfora, a la "Pithos".

Rami, the Nero d'Avolas, all of it.

Looks like i will be attending as well if all goes according to plan. Does anyone know if all the Vinoterra wines from Georgia are aged in amphorae? i may be able to get multiple vintages if so.

OWGS permitting, I will be in attendance.

Now that's what I'm fucking talking about.

Cory-

Glad you can make it. Going to LDM as well, correct?

Levi-

I have to catch a 9:50 flight, so can this thing start pronto?

Nobody has been more surprised at the reaction and response to the Orange Wine Dinner than me. Nobody.

Very rarely in the last 9 or so years that I have been selling Gravner has anyone said "Hey, that's cool, glad to see that on the list". For a long time the ratio of sold bottles to happy customers VS. sold bottles returned by unhappy customers was even at about 1:1.

People apparently have developed quite a bit of interest in the subject in more recent years, and I think we just happened to decide to do something around it at the right time. And to be frank, everyone who was a part of that dinner made it something extra special. The amount of generosity that people showed in sharing items from their cellars was astounding. And the level of discourse was enhanced by the collective knowledge around the tables.

Anyway, in this vein of conversation, the Anfora Wine Dinner as originally conceived (24 people) sold out yesterday. I upped the number of seats today to 50 so that people who want to come can come. It might be wise, if you are thinking about joining in, to go about making your reservation soon. It may very well sell out again, at which point I don't know that I can get more wine to raise the number of seats yet again.

Well, they've always been popular in this area. Damon Haynes, sommelier at Il Palio was a staunch fan. Unfortunately, all his good work has been undone.

He introduced me to Kante, Movia, Lispida, and other weird ass shit I'd never had.

Did we ever figure out exactly when Gravner went Orange? I've been drinking them longer than they've been Orange, but can't remember when it changed.

You've done a great job putting these together and deserve the acclaim you are getting.
