Okay, Levi D, I shall fly up to NYC on the 28th just to be at this orange thing. Can't find your e-mail anywhere, but please do make a note of this, or let me know if theres no room for a Liquidator anymore, so I can then readjust travel plans.

Best,

LL

Strange.

How is it that there is a '47 Cappellano Chinato when I thought the current property was bought by Teobaldo in the 1970's?
Guilhaume could get to the bottom of this.

i was about to write a post about it, yes.

Great. Would love to see you there. We can always make room by asking Cedric Bouchard to leave, if need be.

Brad, you may also recall the time we tasted the '47 Capellano at Red & White, in DUMBO. One of the bottles in the case was Chinato. My notes from that evening:

A couple of days ago I attended a private event. The guest of honor was a bottle of Dott. Giuseppe Cappellano 1947 Barolo, Serralunga d'Alba. The hosts had obtained a case at auction and wanted to try one.

We tasted a few other wines before it: a lifeless '03 Loosen riesling bottled under the "Saint M" label, the second wine of Ducru-Beaucaillou '99, the second wine of Lagrange '98, and a few unmentionables.

Back to the barolo: Most of the bottles in the case showed good corks, leads, and fills. One, however, was inexpertly sealed with wax, leaving some of the cork exposed. The hosts wanted to try this one. (They took out a second one, too, just in case.)

The wax came off quite cleanly and all-too-easily. The cork was shriveled and smaller than the size of one joint of my thumb.

The wine was a deep red, with just a hint of orange at the rim. Looked very young for 58-year-old wine.

A whiff of sherry rose from the glass.

The tannins were fairly gentle. The acidity was solid but not piercing. There was still some barolo perfume, dry roses and earth. As it sat in the glass, however, the sherry pong got more and more pronounced. Ah, well.

The hosts were satisfied. This bodes well for the bottles that were sealed properly. I glanced at the backup bottle, and did a double-take:

The label is different. Instead of a simple drawing of hills and houses, it has a rather professional-looking drawing of flowers (I see a credit for a graphic artist in Milano). And, in addition to the maker and the place, it says "Vecchio Chinato".

Chinato is a blend of barolo wine and a sweet aromatic spirit made from a dozen herbs (including one from China, hence the name). It is a late-19th-century medicinal concoction, and is still made today. I found offerings from Ceretto and Chiarlo, at least.

Now: Does anyone know whether Chinato is meant to be kept this long? Should my friends take it back to the auction house and complain? Or is this a rarity and they are lucky?

Rumors abound about the upcoming Anfora Wine Dinner!

Just asking...

Which Lurker About Town will be bringing bottles of Cornelissen to the dinner? He says he doesn't like publicity, and so doesn't post to WD, but he was just quoted in Food & Wine!

Which famously hilarious internet quipster on hiatus is confirmed for a seat at the dinner? He recently changed jobs and states, but always has time for Orange.

Who will be drinking the "Rodenstock Anfora" wines that will supposedly be opened for the dinner? The claim is that the clay vessels - engraved "Et" - date back to the ancient Etruscan civilization, yet close observers are declaring them to be spurious.

I wasn't at the event, Jeff, but I did pick up my bottle from Blanc et Rouge.

I see. Probably more your kind of place than Orange et Rouge.

Fer sure.

I think you should have some Barolo, or let me bring a bottle of Huet so I can join you guys and not subject myself to horrid wine.

Join us guys where?

I'm not familiar with any upcoming events...

Notice .. Notice .. Notice

Uncle OWGS needs your support!

Unfortunately, the Council of Anfora Elders has a limited supply of Christiano Guttarolo 2006 "Anfora" Primitivio in its coffers. There is enough to go around for the 45 Amphora Phanatics coming to dinner, but not really a lot beyond that.

Say you should by chance have said wine, and that you were for instance coming to the dinner this Thursday (finally! THIS Thursday), it would be pretty cool if you brought a little Christiano '06 along with you on your journey to Tudor City.

Just to put the word out a bit.

The OWGS thanks you for your time.
