I drank a cache of 1978s and 1979s about 5 years ago. They were pretty amazing. Some bottle variation. The best ones were in a class with all the great old wines I've ever drunk. The same cellar produced various big name disappointments too.

Putnam, Jack Durney was a reliably stellar winegrower. He was an old fashioned salt of the earth winegrower who eschewed the over-refined, over-manipulated styles that became common. His Cabernet Reserves were especially fine, but his Estate wines were wonderful as well.

I still have a bunch of the '79 Estate that you mention (drank all of my '79 Reserve). I still have varying amounts of most vintages between '79 and '92. After Jack's death, the '90 and '92 were made by his son, as I recall, and they have been enjoyable.

The Durney Cabs will always be special to me. If only this style of Cabernet Sauvignon were still the norm!!
