Clos Rougeard at the tgjp

I'm a great fan of the 2003 Les Poyeux - well, the one bottle I've had was the best CR bottle I've had...

...and I now have 5 more of them: I was the winner of that lot of 35 bottles of Clos Rougeard (1996, 1999-2003) at Bonhams' this past Saturday. At last I feel I can drink them when I want rather than try to stretch them out.

Oh my, really? Have some of these sitting around...

What are your favorite vintages of the wines? I've had pretty mixed experiences...some fantastic, some mediocre...

Unfortunately, I just lost this whole story I had written up because I hit the wrong key, so that will have to wait until another time. Which is too bad.

We used to have the '96 Bourg and the '96 Poyeux at a French restaurant I used to work in. This was a few years ago. At first I preferred the Poyeux. The Bourg needed time. Time passed. Then the Poyeux seemed to have tired, and I preferred the Bourg, which seemed to have opened up nicely. Further time passed. I began to feel that neither wine was showing particularly well.

It is possible they just closed up their charms for some hibernation, to re-emerge at a later date. That wasn't my impression at the time, however. My impression at the time was that the wines should have been drunk already.

I haven't had these in quite a while, could you mention when it was that you saw them going out of business?

Some more specifics would be nice. This wasn't my expectation and I only have a few bottles.
 
Yeah - wow. I've still got a decent number of them also. It's been a while. I'll pull some for the weekend. Hmm. That would be disappointing.

First, I pick up the lot and the 2003s aren't there; some other wine is there instead. :(

Second, I agree with you Levi - the 1996 I previously had was a wine that needed to be drunk soon. However, the 1997 Brz is a wine that is still very young and has 15-20 years of life, if not more.
 
I only ever drank the 2003s - we tend to get the declined vintages around here (ask me about 2001 Foillard - was it his best vintage this decade or am I rationalizing?)

I thought they were amazing.

Can these wines be purchased next week in NYC somewhere? I haven't quite mastered the whole internet commerce thing.
