No romance with these corks...

Graeme Gee

Graeme Gee
Australian auctioneers Langton's co-principal Andrew Caillard MW badgers McWilliams/Mount Pleasant into doing a comparative tasting of their newly-released 2005 Lovedale Hunter semillon with five white 2005 Bordeaux; S de Suduiraut Blanc, Larrivet Haut Brion Blanc, Domaine de Chevalier, Laville Haut Brion, & Haut Brion Blanc.
He talks about the beneficial effect of screwcaps on the previously-eye-watering attrition rate of cork-ruined semillon, and goes on to observe at this tasting that:
"Two bottles (out of six) of 2005 Haut Brion Blanc were cork-tainted. That was $2000 down the gurgler."
Ouch...
cheers,
Graeme
