Trader Joe's alert

This may be a Northern Calif. offering only so check your local listings...

They have a new private label called VINTJS. The first two offerings are an '08 Syrah (Central Coast) and '08 Chardonnay (Santa Maria). These were both made by Bob Lindquist from Qupe. $7 for each.

I'm not a big Chard drinker, but I figured for the sake of science (and for any parties I might have for non-wine geeks), I'd try it. My take: "eh". It's not bad, but there's not much excitement to it. A bit more acidity would help. 13.6% alc.

The Syrah definitely merits a QPR alert. Aged 9 months in neutral French barrels, 13.8% alc. Black pepper and lavender notes. Good acidity. Definite palate interest with this wine. Nice balance. A year in the cellar probably couldn't hurt.

More evidence of the amount of cheap bulk juice that's hit the CA market.

Lindquist doesn't make Pinot Noir. As far as I know, he never has. Did the label say who did? If his name hadn't been associated with the Syrah, I never would've tried it.
