Never having seen the wines on a shelf, I stumbled across couple of bottles of the 96 clos, 2001 poyeux, bourg, and breze at what appeared to be release prices and grabbed as many as I could afford. While I am familiar with their reputation I'd had never had the opportunity to try any of the Foucault wines.
I opened the 96 clos which was pleasant enough though a bit tired, but the 2001 Bourg was the one that really surprised me. It was a pretty angry wine, kind of a sloppy acidic mess with enormously overpowering roasted red pepper flavors that never really toned down until day three (and even then was far from a pleasant wine). I thought it was a flawed bottle but another bottle showed consistent with the first.
They were not grey market, but did sit on a store shelf for several years. Any ideas on what is going on with this wine...as I have 1 more and still have the poyeux. I saw another tasting note online that referred to the roasted red pepper? I can't imagine this is a typical showing for the Rougeard wines...
