Dark red.
Perfumed dark fruits, some dill, smoke, exotic spices, hint of violets.
Supple and velvety, berry fruits, soft tannins, mellow, structure, lovely balance.
Moderate to lengthy finish with good fullness. [EXCELLENT]

Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard... soft tannins, mellow...

SCMV and mellow, in the same sentence? Was Ken Burnap still involved in the winemaking then, or had he been replaced by a replicant?

Mark Lipton
(still recovering from tannin shock from a few of those late '70s SCMV Pinots)

Mark, Ken was definitely still involved then. I believe Jeff Emery took over from Ken in 2004 or thereabouts.

I have long been a huge fan of Ken and then subsequently Jeff.

I have many times enjoyed serving various of Ken's Pinots double blind and have wine experts characterize them as "clearly" being Burgundies. The SCMV Pinot Noir '88 is probably the finest domestic Pinot I have ever enjoyed (and I still have a few of them left).

And, yes, "mellow" fits the SCMV wines well when they have evolved...but it takes lots of time and patience. Then decanting is a requirement. Their wines are dry-farmed and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Their Merlots and Duriffs rival the PNs for quality, in my view.

S, Assuming good provenance, its viability is virtually assured. Ken's wines have always made good old bones.

Ken had great success with the Jarvis fruit over a long period of time (as I recall).
