A Fabulous Meal With Good Wines

Do drop by travel clinic on your way there for some shots and a Zithromax chaser.
Marinating my entire body in sake isn't going to work?

Levi, meet Rahsaan.

Also, Sharon: defeat the "i" soon.

I intend to retain my head. Not for hackey-sack, or football, or futbol, or anything along those lines.

Passed on chicken sushi in Japan, but the horse sashimi (basashi) was phenomenal. It was served with ponzu sauce and leek.

Oooh, I know a sushi chef who likes him some horse. Good stuff. It's no turtle of course, and it is certainly no whale tongue, but horse? Why, of course!

Certain Italians like them some horse as well.

Whale tongue was only OK, but fried whale tale (kujira-katsu) is some of the best street food I've had in my life. It tastes like aquatic fried brisket.

yes, horse is right up there with whale and porpoise sashimi, but a glass of turtle blood with a raw turtle egg blended in, now you're talkin!

Have you been to the 400 year old (or thereabouts) restaurant that only serves turtle? The Peter Luger's of turtle?

I have heard tell of such a place, and it holds a fascination for me.

Here on the Gulf Coast we are ardently aware of the endangered Ridley Sea Turtles which are so majestic.

I hope other turtles that are harvested for any reason are not similarly endangered.

. . . . . Pete

if it's in moriguchi shi suburb of osaka, yes....but it was years ago that i had that concoction (plus a full course turtle meal) and i bet the place was merely one of many....not THE one your talking about. curious to hear more if you have details.

there is a wild animal restaurant here in kyoto we've just heard about....plan to go sometime in january. not just crocs and bear on the menu, but bugs and stuff too.

ps - Pete, no sea turtles as far as i know

Levi, this must be the place, here in kyoto in fact, whaddya know.....12 generations, 400 yrs, sounds about right. looks like these are soft shelled snapping turtles (don't know if they are farmed, probably are) and according to one account, high in collagen, among other things...haven't seen a website, they probably don't need one if they've gotten this far, right?

as an aside, there are some pretty hilarious comments on the joi ito pages underneath the text

In my quickly receding youth I had chicken sashimi. In Roppongi of all places. Bincho. No ill effects at all. But this was my callow youth. Not my callous present. You couldn't bribe me with anything to have it now.
