Two lesser 96 Burgundies - one good, one not so good

96 Jadot Chorey les Beaune - Started off more or less dead, then rallied for about fifteen minutes with a decent sappiness. Then absolutely packed it in and went down the drain.

96 Lafarge Bourgogne - OK, I know I tend to be a little hyperbolic, but this was just so good. Complex and dark toned with just a hint of meat in the nose and finish. A lot of compressed density, still tasted young, and I would tend to give this yet 2-3 more years. Tons going on in a very subtle way. Completely stayed together and even improved over the evening. I would not have guessed Volnay - this seemed more Pommardian than anything. Not sure where the grapes actually come from for this.

Interesting showing on the Lafarge. Were you cellaring that on purpose?

Brad, I would have expected this wine to still be fine, especially given the vintage.

It was recently purchased, but I was not surprised by the performance. A top of the line Bourgogne should be good for 15 years in the right vintage...they are often village level wines anyway.

I agree, I was surprised how over the hill it was. And it showed every sign of being a well stored bottle.

I have single bottles of 1996 Paul Pernot Clos de Dessus Marconnets and 1996 Camus Bruchon Beaune Clos du Roi.

Drink, hold, or hope they are still alive?

Heck, those will be terrific. I had a bottle of the Pernot 95 a year or so ago and it was too young. I would think the Beaune would be fine too. My tendency would be to hold those another 2-3 years personally, but they would probably be pretty good now. I'm still holding 95s and 96s are more case by case.

Vineyard is adjacent to Volnay, and at one time was classified as Volnay.

I'd guess hold the Pernot. The 97 Beaune Reversees was really astonishing the other day, possibly the only wine I've had from the vintage about which I've had no reservations. I'd not really taken any notice of his reds before, which is clearly a mistake.

There's something about primarily white burgundy makers producing a red burgundy. The reds seem to have a light body with intense flavor. My kind of wine.
