Oh, I'm not so sure. Of course, I'm from the American South, where being "nice" is a part of everyday "manners," as well as a cover for many sins. I still think it's an under-appreciated virtue. "Nice" may imply mild, but it may also imply generosity of spirit, a willingness to engage another if only for a moment, to not ignore. I'm guessing that there was an open conversation here that left Otto with a good impression along these lines. Why should "nice" detract from any other virtues?

I agree and unless I qualify it (such as saying "nice enough I guess") I always intend it as a compliment. Of course I remember once using it as an an adjective to refer to the Liquidator and nearly getting my head chopped off as a result.
