We're have the A et P de Villaine 2005 La Digoine tonight. This is one '05 Burgundy that has not gotten too tight yet. It's a gorgeous wine.

Is Digoine the varietal?

In the light of the rumblings above about this abominable grammatical error, I'm wondering if the Politburo has become incapable of taking proper action. Couldn't a program be instituted that will automatically translate all misuses into the correct form? Or barring that, perhaps purges are in order.

Hmm, must be.

Maybe because de Villaine has struggled so much with that pesky pinot noir varietal that seems to have taken root in the area? Soon all the Cote Chalonnaise will be planted in aligote (eek!) and "La Digoine."

No man, no problem.

No man, no problem.

Clearly I'm used to a better order of Politburo. Or perhaps you mean that it's no problem because the purges have begun?

But really, if you were debating whether Bonobos and Chimpanzees should be considered different species or different members of the same species, would you refer to them as varietals or varieties?

It was a saying of Stalin's in the 30s, but I abbreviated it. "Death solves all problems--no man, no problem."

Ah, this makes me feel much better. Forgive my unpardonable ignorance. Oops, I meant pardonable ignorance. Suddenly I don't feel better.

I believe you mean the Bouzeron varietal instead of "aligote".

Or maybe they could plant some of that La Tache varietal to replace the La Digoine stuff. It seems to sell for more.

I thought La Tache was the variety and Chambolle was the varietal?

Isn't Varietal an area in Germany around the Varie mountains? I think it's somewhere near the Pfalz and they grow a lot of Kerner and Ortega there.

I have a question from my recent trip to Alaska: are Bud and Bud Light different varietals?

The more pertinent question is variety of what? Certainly they are not varieties of beers. Selzer water perhaps.
