Subtlety

Florida Jim

Florida Jim
Its been awhile since I was really excited by a wine purchase. Ive had lots of exciting wines but buying has been pushed aside in favor of trying to get a business started.

A nice price on the 2007 Edmund Vatan, Sancerre Clos La Nore got me to take the plunge (how often do you see this stuff discounted?) and I bought a case. It arrived yesterday.

I knew what I would do the box hadnt been in the house ten minutes before a bottle was opened. Ill grab out one or two more bottles to take with me back to FL but the remainder will go into storage here (where I cant get at it until Im back out one way to be disciplined).

The wine is the epitome of grace and subtlety. It is not big, powerful, acidic or explosive it is perfectly balanced, complex, very precise and beautifully scented and flavored.

Several sauvignon blancs I drink and like (especially those from CA) are more voluptuous, more viscous and more intense. But none weave a spell like Vatan.

But then, I remember a time I was quite taken with Bay Watch.
Now, I prefer It Takes a Thief.

Best, Jim

There are quite a few sauvignon blancs I like as well, and from a number of places and in many styles. But for me, that one is still the summit.

Jim, I appreciate subtlety, and have not yet found my ideal sauvignon b, so thanks for the tip. Btw, any recc's for an sb that reads like "The Avengers"?

I prefer Franois over Pascal. I Buy both

Just to clarify, does "reading like the Avengers" mean big in a Marvel Comics cartooney way or in a BBC masterpiece theatre sort of way?

In other words, how are the Cotats different from Vatan?

Just to be nit-picky, the television program "The Avengers" wasn't a BBC production and never aired on Masterpiece Theatre. It was produced by what eventually became Thames Television in the UK and aired in the US on ABC. By the time I started watching it in the mid-'60s, it was pretty campy and unsuited for the staid leanings of Masterpiece (Theatre), not to mention the fact that it had ended its run before the inception of MT.

So, I guess I just have to get used to the fact that everyone is kvelling over sb that's $50+ per bottle?

Not even a blip on the radar screen of wine nonsense.
Best, Jim

I didn't know Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman had careers back in the 60s.

the clue lies more in my taking Florida Jim's "It Takes a Thief" cue, though i can see how my using the word "reading" could have been taken literally. i meant the tv series...and, yeah, i guess "brains and cleavage" fits, along with leather, guns and kinky boots.

ie, the avengers version of sb might be "subtle" + Emma Peel
