The Latest Fad in Wine Blogging and Wine Criticism

These miscreants who tout purple wines with 15% alc., made in hot regions where dates and papayas, not grapes, should be grown - they are indeed a despicable lot.

What I fail to see (names should have been named, possibly) is where they consider themselves as a persecuted minority. My impression is that these characters have the gall to consider themselves in the majority. Who knows why...

I believe this post is not part of the fad that Joe has identified. But I could be mistaken. Even heavy-handed irony can cause interpretive errancy.

Actually, I think VS might be one of these new faddists.

I'd love to hear his take on spoofulation among his colleagues in Spain. All I ever read from him is broad attacks against Mullahs, extremists and dogmatists.

I cannot read his Spanish language writing so perhaps he is fighting the good fight elsewhere. If so, I'm sorry I don't read Spanish.

As you see, Jonathan, I was closer to the mark than you were...

I have not only been writing about wine for three decades, but also making wine for one. It's a strange feeling, to be judged by someone who has never read anything but my brief posts on a wine board or, apparently, never tasted any of my wines. There's obviously enough proof out there, in writing and in bottles, that I don't have to proffer any justifications or excuses for my views on wine. It's all vastly on the record. I know that won't stop some critics from describing me (or my colleagues Michel Bettane and Jancis Robinson, as we've seen in some recent publications) as faddists on the payroll of Constellation Brands.

Oh well.

Oh well.

Reading this, I feel great relief at not having a reputation to protect.

(On the other hand, I could really go for Constellation Brands offering me a suitable monetary incentive to be a corrupt faddist.)

The faddist-on-the-take hazing process is pretty grueling. Junkets, forced wearing of logo gear, incl. undergarments, eating from the trough ...

did you have to endure this treatment?

Just enough to gain my senses (I hope.)

It's at times like these that I feel that I'm reading the subtext with no referent to the main text. Commentary without thesis or, as CC used to put it: URL, please?

Seems to be working out OK for Sadat X though.

I thought it was a reference to the ITB people posting on wine berserkers.
Could be way off target though.

And, frankly, there's not much that's more tiresome to us than having to wade through a steady stream of personal grievances or comments about how the posters, moderators, or wine gurus at some other wine forum are either evil or stupid. So please post that stuff THERE, not here, or go buy your own soapbox.

Although I found the phrase "mullahs and dogmatists" compelling, I have to admit that, otherwise, I haven't been able to figure out what this thread is about.

Oh well.

You are right. I misread Joe's remarks. In these posts, you definitely do exemplify the trend he has identified.

If I'm the one you are referring to, I have tasted your wine, but this thread is about posts, not about wine. Of course, I may still be misreading.

May I reassure the newbies and lurkers?

I for one have no idea what this thread is about.

Now back to the regular programming.
