CWD: The End Is Near

Joe Perry

Joe Perry
As close as I can tell, this is very near complete:

Am I fooling myself to think that I can carry on in the current market? It seems that my cellar has not rebounded from my wine geek wedding in 2007. Should I just give up and sell off to Kim Caldwell?

I feel like I can't keep up any more...

Well, for one, I have experienced shrinkage (i.e. no growth) and mightily so, for the first time in 8 years. It makes me worry about sustainability. Once a cellar loses its ability to sustain itself, how does it survive until prosperity strikes again?

I can't make heads or tails of that. Some of it seems nonsensical. The 1999 Gilles Robin Crzes-Hermitage went over the hill two years ago? The '97 Huet Haut-Lieu 1ere Trie will go over the hill in seven years?

I sure as hell hope Joe isn't the person who gave a '98 Allemand Cornas an "86" unless that's a special code for being out of the wine. I mean I met Joe Perry once and he didn't seem like a retard.

Now you see my dilemma.

I'll give you six bucks for the Gilles Robin. You'd break even.

That'll have to include delivery, of course.

Joe, I have to warn you I think that's $3 under FMV, delivery included.

I think I speak for all the newbies and lurkers when I say I don't have the least idea what this thread's about.

Just as a guess, is it merely cellar exhibitionism? I hear there are whole areas of the www based on that. I could be misinterpreting all kinds of things.

I too don't believe I see your concern. Not "enough" wine? Precious little that's ready to pull and enjoy for current drinking? Those were the only two possibilities I saw, and the former is more of an ego issue, while the latter does present practical problems.

Personally, I've bought next to no wine for a bit more than three years. My cellar was getting to the point where it was too much, especially as my wife cut back on consumption due to health issues. In that time, my cellar has drifted to a level I'm comfortable with, and has a much better ratio of things that are ready-ish to drink, and those that need time, so that I no longer hear oppressive screams of imminent over-the-cliffness from countless bottles each time I visit the cellar. That is something I don't miss.

If that cellar were mine, I'd stick a good dose of reds and whites (how many depends on how much you drink, which is a relatively personal inquiry I won't make here) with a 1 to 3 year drinking window to try to get better balance, and not feel the pressure to pull things before their time, or to pull "special" bottles for a Tuesday evening risotto (though I do advocate this from time to time it's not a sustainable plan for most folks over the long haul).

So, that might be completely off the mark, but I had to take a shot.

Cheers,

Dave
