This might be THE great Chavignol of my lifetime, as beautiful as the 1996 and 2002 were this may turn out ever better. Size, depth, intensity with all the things one loves in Vatan.

12.5 ? Guess again. Which makes it even more remarkable.

I loved my first bottle. I had a second bottle last week and found it too sweet. Go figure.

I've (been lucky enough) to have a number of Vatan over the years. Never before have I found them unbalanced. The '05 was too sweet last week. As a Vatanista, I was shocked to find fault in the wine. I can only hope that it was a one-time error. The first bottle of 05 that I had blew the 04s out of the water.

I may have to pull an '05 out of storage.
Has anyone tasted the '06 lately? I had the wine once and found it was disjointed and shockingly sweet, enough to actually not buy any. I've always wondered if that was a big mistake..
Drank the '08 last week. Rich and powerful, with bright acidity. Impeccably balanced with intense aromatics of anise seed. Way more approachable than the '07 I tasted last year around this time.

I posted on the 06 I tried during summer and (mildly) dissed it for not being the pinnacle of exquisiteness that Vatan should represent and nearly got thrown off the board, so form your opinion.

I still can't find the site of your victimization.

The '03 Vatan has never been more than clunky. On the other hand, I suppose that represents the vintage well. I'll try my remaining two in 10 and 20 years, respectively.

The '03 Vatan had those roasted grape skin flavors that some other Loire whites had that year. I thought they were interesting, but I also managed to drink a case of Pepiere from '03 and enjoy it. It isn't often you get melon flavors in Muscadet.

I should add, at the risk of insulting a friend who pressed the bottle upon me with great enthusiasm*, the 2003 Clos la Nore was a hot cooked grape grain alcohol thing you drink when the leaves are falling and you shed a 15% abv tear.

*He doesn't read this board, but if you want to Google him, his name is [redacted].

ETA: Just because he likes 03 Vatan does not mean I should out him, I realize. All tastes are in nature. I think it was Jean-Jacques Rousseau who said as much.
