2003 Baudry Chinon La Croix Boise?

i've been hankering for a cab franc and saw this available....was wondering where it might be in it's arc and if Chinons fared any better than much of the rest of Europe in '03?

tks in advance for any thoughts.

I liked several 2003 Chinons a lot for drinking on release. I was uncertain how they'd age and didn't lay any down which I sort of regret now. So I guess there's a good chance it's good but I don't really know.

I agree with Jay, many of the usual suspects (including this CB) were lovely - if rich - shortly after they were released. But for whatever reason I never thought to buy any for cellaring (my own personal issue I'm sure). And whenever I see 'older' vintages I usually go to 2002. But please try it and add to our collective knowledge!

as i mentioned on another thread, the '03 baudry grezeaux is a beauty and ready to age a while longer. also, the 2003 breton bourgeuil (sp?) nuits d'ivrese is hanging in there.

appreciate the input (i did not see that other thread, robert) but a little digging here and there brought up enough positive info to warrant buying the wine. thanks.

and if there is more in good condition please PM me the location. I didn't get my fill in 2003 and would love to top up with well stored bottles.

I believe 2003 will be especially successful for Breton Perrieres and Foucault Bourg (I've said as much elsewhere, Pierre Breton said something about Perrieres as a particularly cold, deep-rooted site) but maybe not as much for the Croix-Boise, but it is still excellent.

done.

their (apparently) last bottle in stock is set to arrive here with an order this a.m. (not sure you want to add shipping from japan if i were to find more though, VLM, but happy to pm you anyway)

so, does that mean that Perrieres has a real tough time getting close to ripening in "normal" non-heat wave yrs?

Oh, Japan. Forget it.

Perrieres ripens just fine in other years, the way Pierre explained it to me was that the site has been farmed well for a long time, the roots are deep and that the microclimate keeps the vines from suffering too much (shutting down) in the heat. Sorry, I wish I could add more detail, but that's all I can recall. We discussed this at some length, but we were both trashed.

i am glad to hear on occasion that wine conversations with real content and intent end up this way between vignerons and clients

that's sort of what i hope for in the upcoming event here in january: Vini-Japon

Apparently a buddy wine seller is sharing a booth with Frank Cornelissen himself....and a Lapierre rep is showing up too. some decent importers will be there too.

ps - VLM, if i do find a bottle, it will go in the satchel bound for US......i've got friends in Asheville....at least a handoff point

Well, if you do make it to Asheville you should announce it and set up a jeebus.

No need to carry a bottle back. I have a few, but thanks.

wonderful nose on this wine, but strangely for the vintage the palate is thin. i don't know cf too well, but all the characteristics are in place, just a bit jumbled and most notably watery in the middle.

looks like it just needed some time....it's fleshed out well, but without doubt astringently tannic. a few years more sideways, perhaps, or pairing it with a heavy tomato based pasta dosed with liberal quantities of reggiano could be fun.
