Life's just too short to drink 03's.

levi recently served me a benanti etna bianco pietramarina 2003 that i enjoyed. but, i too normally avoid the vintage at all costs.

Not a big fan of many 03s, but in wine I have found it too simple to generalize like this. I have liked 03s from Mugneret-Gibourg and Truchot (Truchots are the only ones I own - not as good as other vintages, but still Truchot). I have also had some really nice Christoffel Urz Wurz Spalese. I don't know that it will make old bones but for $7 (what premier cru sold them for) they were mighty tasty.

Howard - amazingly, 03 Mugneret's are still available locally - any recommendations?

I am not a fan of truchot's 03s - more 03 to me than truchot.

JJ Prum's auction spatlese, otoh, is prum and excellent.

Well, golly, we opened an '03 Chteau la Caminade "La Commandery" last night, and it was very nice indeed. Still firm (it's that smidgen of tannat that does it!) but showing the good dark fruit and some of that famous "unobtrusive" oak spice.

I quite liked a couple of 03s after a couple hours of shoveling, yesterday. Pieropan Calvarino and Roagna Vigna Rionda. Well, the Rionda was a tad slutty. But, then, I was in a fruity Nebbiolo mood. (It was on sale back when. And worth every penny.) Calvarino shows considerable class (structure) for the vintage rep. 94 aux Moines Roche aux Moines in front of me is intriguing. Another vintage no one wants. But there is a lot going on here. Caramelized fennel and Virginia wild flower honey (No, really. I had to sniff a jar to verify). And not at all lean. Oh. The 99 Lignier-Michelot Chambolle was very pretty. Acid spine to the forefront, though. Think I should drink them up.

Sicilian summers are always hot.

Wish I had storage space to lay some down.

Maureen, have you had any 03s from Schaefer or Muller-Catoir?

I was 'fortunate' enough to taste a lot of '03 wines in one go soon after release, which cured me of any inclination to buy any of them. Most were Germans, and from good houses, but, caricatures of what they normally are.

I have exactly two (2) '03s in my cellar. A couple bottles of a value CdP. I'm sure there are others I'd like, I just haven't found them or spent much time looking.

i have some cotes du ventoux '03's which are not baked, stewed nor plummy. their vineyards of syrah and gren. are at the base of mt. ventoux (at about 1000') and apparently catch the mistral. they are aging (so far) on an even curve and quite nice...that's all i have from '03 though.

chateau pesquie...it's the quintessence cuvee i referred to

fwiw, i wouldn't call the producer spoof-free, nor would i say they are making mind blowing stuff...but i like this cuvee for some reason. it usually has an impressive funky garrigue-ey nose, and some green notes mixed in with not-overripe berries. it seems to age slowly, but consistently. (tho their oak regimen, on paper at least, might scare some off)

I spent a couple of weeks in July in an un-air-conditioned house near Mt. Ventoux during the summer of 2003 and can attest, even in 2003, to the night time cooling effects of the mountain. The breeze may not have kicked in until 3 AM or so, but it did kick in. I remember drinking a wines from "Les Vignerons du Mt Ventoux", simply labeled Bio or something like that - It was quite serviceable.

As far as other '03's, the wines from Domaine Tempier seems to have faired quite well.

Don't know about other Jura producers, but I've loved the bottles of Puffeney's '03 Arbois VV that I've opened over the last year.
