'95 Bordeaux question

Kay Bixler

Kay Bixler
Want to drink Bordeaux tonight and trying to figure out which is the better choice: '95 Pontet-Canet or '95 Grand Puy Lacoste or neither. Anyone tasted recently?

Best,
Kay

A friend opened a '95 GPL at dinner recently. It was tannic and pretty closed. But not undrinkable, and it did improve some over a couple hours. i have no idea if Pontet Canet would be tougher or not.

Hmmm. ?

i think unconventional wisdom or the fifth law of disorder would point towards pontet-canet, i.e. any man-made obstructions should be easier to overcome at this stage than in gpl, no ?

my most recent experience with 95 pontet-canet goes back to november 29th 2002 (now why would I remember this?), but on that occasion it was one cool customer.

So you guys are saying neither but if I had to choose, Pontet-Canet. Thanks! I'll find something else for tonight.

try digging for a bottle of 2005 ch moulin canon fronsac from hubau - I've had it more recently, two days ago

Well since you asked, '94 d'Armailhac. It was actually very nice in a wash down the lamb chops kind of way and is probably as good as it will ever be. It's weird because I bought a lot of Bordeaux when I first became interested in wine (all of it on Brad Kanes recommendation) and now my tastes are elsewhere but the wine is still there in my cellar. I guess a person could have worse problems.

Also drank an '02 Pinon Vouvray since Jay was raving. It is indeed very good wine and a little sweeter than I remembered. Had it with some yellow perch (the ice fishing went well) in a beurre blanc sauce. I snuck a little minced mushroom into the butter sauce and it really complimented the wine but I think next time I'll go with a Savennieres.

Hi Chris, nice to see you. Thanks for the straight answer.

Best,
Kay

This must be the true meaning of Holiday spirit, to resist the temptation to abuse Kane for filling Kay's cellar with questionable Bordeaux. Either that, or the Liquidator is too busy with the twins again.

Nothing wrong with '95 Leoville Barton, Pichon-Lalande, Ducru or Grand-Puy-Lacoste, which I seem to recall was part of our mutual stash of '95's.

No Pichon-Lalande and the Leoville Barton was bought on the personal recommendation of Anthony Barton himself.

That leaves us with Ducru and Grand-Puy-Lacoste and of course Monbousquet, Brad. 1995 Chateau Monbousquet.

I will never let you live it down as that is the only redeeming quality of the wine.

I recommended '95 Monbosquet? I can't imagine that. Finca Villacreces and Haciendo Monasterio I can live with, but I don't recall Monbosquet, except for the '96, which I recommended to point-minded people.

The true Holiday spirit will not allow me to confront owners of 95 Ducru who allow their preferences to stray elsewhere.
