Best and worst Christmas presents

I bend my fly barbs down, but with ice traps I don't think you can set a hook without them?

You can fish barbless but you'll lose a lot of bait. They just wiggle off. I use "finesse" or circle hooks because they tend towards lip hooks. My buddies all laugh but I do as well as everybody else.

I also bend my fly barbs, at least anything above size 18. But that is sport fishing, ice fishing is more about getting a freezer full of perch. And drinking beer outside in the middle of winter. Don't forget sunscreen!

Best. Thread. Ever.

I use circle hooks (with barbs) when cod fishing, but I don't have any small enough for freshwater, I'll have to track them down. A new store just opened in town specifically for ice fishing and I am dreading spending any time there as I will spend much money.

I will be testing the ice New Year's Day. I plan on sending Amy out on the ice with a teather around her and tell her to jump a few times. No use wasting good fuel!

Best,
Joe

i'm in the stat for bending barb buddy group too....but i am 99% c and r trout....and barbed is illegal where i fish anyway. you might be able to pop a can of beer with them without removing gloves too, i suppose.

ok, Kay, can we have one recipe and wine pairing for perch? (and what kind of perch?)

Sure. Make your favorite tartar sauce. Dredge yellow perch fillets in flour, salt and pepper and fry in butter. It is heaven. Otherwise anything that works with sweet, flaky fish will be great. Perch bisque, baked perch, perch cakes, it is all wonderful. Serve with no-malo chardonnay from your favorite local winery or a nice off vintage Savennieres.

Okay, first mistake is inviting your wife. You do realize that this type of fishing involves standing on ice in the cold all day right? Many girls are opposed to that and rightfully so.

I've never tasted yellow or white perch as when I catch them in the summer, they are wormy. Winter temps cure that.

She's a Maine girl. The only three people I know who ice fish are Northern women. It's a different breed.

Joe will need to send 3 Amys out to properly test the ice in advance.

Last time I went ice fishing I was 14 and we caught 30ish perch on Green Lake in upstate Wisconsin. The chef at the Heidel House Resort filleted and prepared all of them for us using the Bixler family recipe (at no small cost to Pops I am sure).
