I thought about mentioning these and other Mencia wines, but they were my great discoveries of 2007 and 2008. In 2009 they almost became house reds.

Also, at the end of 2009, after just a sip from a rep, I developed a big crush on the 2002 LdH vina Cubillo. Went and bought all I could afford. Great value at ~$20/bottle.

2009 featured many great values and interesting wines, but fewer peaks than the previous couple of years. Some memorable wines:

Utterly Typical and Delicious Selbach-Oster Riesling Gracher Domprobst Spatlese 1999; Quivira Zinfandel Dry Creek Wine Creek Ranch 2005; Bucklin Zinfandel Sonoma Valley Old Hill Ranch 2006. These wines perfectly fullfilled their terroir's promise for me.

Not at all Typical but Still Delicious Scott Harvey Zinfandel Amador Vineyard 1869 2005; Lamborn Zinfandel Howell Mountain Estate 2006. Two atypical Zins, the Scott Harvey being an almost delicate Pinot-like Zin from ancient Amador vines, the Lamborn an elegant and charming rendition of what is usually a raucous high-powered wine.

Out of Left Field but Delicious - Channing Daughters White Blend Meditazione Long Island 2007. A fruity floral pot-pourri spritzed with Palo Cortado.

Classic and Peaking Brilliantly Ridge Zinfandel Sonoma County Geyserville 1999; Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Red Rock 1985; Brocard Chablis 1re Cru Selection Extreme 2002.

Late edited-in Category: Most Promising - Chehalem Riesling Williamette Valley Dry Reserve 2007, Penner-Ash Viognier Rogue Valley 2007. The Riesling showed just how good Northern Oregon can be with this grape, with Trimbachian length, structure and grip. As for the Penner-Ash, finally a domestic Viognier that delivers the fun without the punch. Maybe southern Oregon is the place? I've had several other good ones from there, but this was the most graceful.

My list excluded all Verset wines I drank.
 
You would have to go with the South Fork! It's like putting on a Pouilly-Fum and asking a Sancerrois if he's happy.

In any case, I don't really have an emotional stake in wines from the Guyland. I swear.
 
Lies. It's all she drinks. Her Parisian friends tell her about wines they've tasted and she presents their notes as their own. Hell, even the Selosse thing is a sham, a front, the longest-running wine board snow job since the Red White character ruled the airwaves.

There must be some intervening variables because I can't see how syrah is any more toxic than other grapes.

True, I needed a bit of a head clearing New Year's day after cleaning up the unfinished champagne on New Year's Eve. Nothing a quick dip, or two, in the Atlantic didn't clear up.

For me, all things being equal, there is something in Syrah and for others Cab Sav, that is more headache inducing than other varieties. I know I can't be alone in this regard.

Interesting stuff.

I've never noticed any difference across grapes in my own experiences, but I guess it works differently for others.
