The East Village of wine

Lou A.

Lou Amdur
Sorry if this hurts your eyes, but I got a laugh out of today's Garagiste offer,

"Where Cornas remains the East Village of the Rhone, never in favor and always on the slightly rough side of the fence, the Williamsburg or, more appropriately, the Red hook of the Rhone is now firmly in the high hills above St. Joseph and the Ardeche."

Block that obsolete metaphor! 30 years ago there were trees growing through the windows of abandoned, tax-delinquent buildings on Avenue B. Today, there are air conditioners. Red Hook was never as dicey as the LES was in the 70s and early 80s--today, there are fancy restaurants and co-ops in Red Hook.

Why is he conflating Williamsburg and Red Hook.

I have never gotten these Garagiste emails but when other people quote them they always seem to be a mangled mess of words and thoughts, none of which make much sense.

I guess that's his schtick?

Barforama. Everyone knows Cornas is the Montreuil of the Rhne. His secret locale must be, like, the Ivry-sur-Seine or something.

Also, Cte-Rtie is the Cold Spring Harbor of the Rhne.

And Chteauneuf-du-Pape is the Jones Beach.

This is really fun.

I think Morgon Cte du Py is best associated with a small random village in the Adirondacks where they make really good moonshine.

Saint-Emilion is the Ossining of Bordeaux.

OK, I'll stop.

Don't stop! Don't stop!

Jurancon is the Left Coast of Gaillac. The bewildering imprecision of exposition, hyperbole and conflation of unrelated idiom at the Mechaniste site is entertaining.

In the early '80s, I used to rehearse with Frank Maya at a loft on B and 4th. It was the only time in my life when I really wished I owned a handgun.

Not because of Frank, I hope, but because of the rough neighborhood .... (Even in the late '80 when the World was open on 4th btwn C&D, it was still pretty dicey.)

Frank was, among other things, a great bandleader. He knew what he wanted, and he knew how to say what he wanted. I wish I could remember the name of the woman who played marimba. She was probably the best musician in the band.

As a resident of the East Village, I take offense to the reference. My neighborhood is more like St. Joseph. With the price of Clape '07 as a benchmark, Cornas is obviously Tribeca...
I only wish I could find Mr Trollat's apartment!

I fail to understand the marketing logic of making NYC references to French wine sold in Seattle. Then again I applaud anyone in any state who can increase the value of my real estate holdings.

As someone how lived in (through) Red Hook in the early 80's and worked in the LES during the same, we could have given you a run for your money.

I can't help with the marketing logic. I think the referencing has something to do with the fact that Jon Rimmerman, who writes the Garagiste offers, now lives in NY, although his business remains (where it was started) in Seattle.
