NWR: Color me tickled

Cal Berkeley, UCLA, USC, only had advance ticket sales numbering a grand total of 33. So her performance has been cancelled by the three named schools. The fly over area is unique.

We're just bored of drag queen acts. I guess they're still novel at Purdue.

Can a biological female be a drag queen, Scott? Ask Carson if unsure.

Heard they had to cancel the Gaga gig last night. Not too tore up and distraught are you?

From Rolling Stone via Brooklyn Vegan:

The singer was scheduled to play at Indiana's Purdue University last night, but canceled the show at literally the last minute. After openers Semi Precious Weapons and Jason DeRulo performed at the college's Elliott Hall of Music, the crowd was informed "Lady Gaga will not be able to take the stage this evening due to sudden illness."

Her account of events, as reported in the student newspaper today, is that paramedics were called for an irregular heart beat and she was advised to not go on stage. Yeah, it was a mess, but a lot less of a mess than the cancellation of a Devo concert that I was queued up for at the Riverside Civic Auditorium in '80-'81. The crowd then grew so distraught when a second show was canceled (due to an idiot leaping onto stage in the first and shorting out the lighting board) that they rioted, leading to someone throwing a rock through the ginormous plate glass facade of the Civic and riot cops being called out (with tear gas -- oh boy!). Yours truly, a veteran of the Peoples Park riots of an earlier era, managed to exit stage left as the riot cops descended on the unhappy Devo fans.

Rioters at a Devo show... who would have thought?!? On a side note, I'm trying to get the guys I play music with to cover Be Stiff.

You don't say. My inlaws were there, too. On the off chance of winning the name game, they were Berkeley grads in '72:

Oscar (Biff) Traber, Comp Sci and Applied Math and MS in Operations Research- on into tech at AT&T, Bell Labs, Unix Systems Group, Novell, etc.- many incorporations of pretty much the same department)

Maret (nee Gillett), nutrition BS & PhD ('76)- on into microbiology at NYU, eventually specializing in Vitamin E back in Berkeley and now at the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State.

Linus sickened many people with too much vitamin C, if I remember correctly?

I was but a wee pre-adolescent then, but had the (mis)fortune of having ventured into Berkeley that day with a friend to meet up with his mom. Wow, talk about a clusterfuck! Before we were done, we had learned the difference in how to react to tear gas vs. blister gas (water for the former, not for the latter) and had sprinted back to campus to escape the mayhem.

Riotous Devo fans? Makes we remember even less fondly the foul-mouthed losers pushing to the front during the pupper show segment of a They Might Be Giants show. Yes, you read that right. Apparently puppets drive people to brawl, almost. I can only imagine what happens when people wearing flower pots on their heads get canceled.

If I had though it out for a minute, I'd have realized this of course. Apologies for the premature aging. Take some Vitamin C.
