I need San Francisco help

Guilhaume's list is pretty good, but I find Katana-ya to be no better than decent. If there's a truly great ramen place in the city I haven't found it yet.

That would be my assessment, but I'm not from there and don't live there.

The great ramen places I've tried are in San Mateo (Santa) and Saratoga (Ramen Halu). According to Melanie Wong's personal ramen rankings on Chowhound (66 rated as of 7/09), Katana-ya rates as #18 and that's the highest ranked one in SF.

Even Santa and Halu kinda suck. SF is a phoked city. Try Hai Ky Mi Gia for southern style or Turtle Tower for northern. Leave ramen for LA or even NYC these days.

I used to like Ryowa in Mountain View but haven't been in years. There are probably better places in the south bay.

What don't you like about Halu?

I don't think Santa is quite as good as when it was in the old location, but it's still very fine.

I still need to get to Himawari in downtown San Mateo.

Also ...

Lers Ros is much better than Manora (or anywhere else in SF) for Thai.

The quesadilla at El Castillito on Church is a revelation.

There's better pizza than Piccino at the original Delfina, Pizzaiolo, etc.

I can't stand Quince in the new space any more than the old - maybe less in fact.

Humphrey Slocumbe is far better than Bi-rite Creamery.

Yes on Bar Jules, Ciccia,

The Terroir guys are total dickweeds but that doesn't stop me from going.

Is that the place with the transformational tortas? I still fantasize about those.

Yeah, but they're our dickweeds.

Ah good catch. Tortas Los Picudos! Yum.

Maybe the best meal I've ever had in SF. Fucking genius. I've tried to replicate without success.

Those gals are the best. Pure genius for under 7 bucks.

I agree with pretty much everything Kraft said. Alex from Farm turned me onto Lers Ros.

And I don't dislike Quince, except for the bill part. Haven't been to the new space and probably never will.

I also recommend Tartine and Boulette's Larder (in the Ferry Building) for breakfast or lunch. And Old Mandarin Islamic in the Sunset for all your halal Chinese food needs.

Some places are too tiny and precious to mention on a board, so PM me if you're into sashimi.

Ler Ros looks awesome. I'm going to the Great American Music Hall next month, but there won't be time to have dinner and get a good seat. Do they do corkage? Does it have jeebus potential?

Sandi loves Mexican food as do I (40 years in Bakersfield will do that to a person..her not me) so El Castillito gets added to the list.

From what I understand, all of the nouveau ice cream joints (bi-rite, HS, Three-Twins) use the same base recipe. if that is the case, then it really comes down to what kinds of flavors you like. I wanted to to be wowed by HS's creative combinations, but just wasn't. Maybe I just like it more traditional.

El Tonayense, 22nd and Harrison. Tacos de cabeza. BYO beer in a paper bag.

I might drink BYO beer in a paper bag with tacos de cabeza, but that is just because i don't know which vintage of Huet D-S would go best with them. The real SFJoe would know.
