It's not really the autonomy, it's the initiative and the fortitude.

Rogozov never could have done it without Gerbovich, Teplinsky and Arternev. Jim B. never could have done it without Grossman and Florida Jim. We all need Comrades.

The Rogozov article said, in part, "After 36 days at sea she decanted part of the expedition onto the ice shelf..."

I did not know that expeditions were so tight and needed time outside the original vessel.
