Morgonotopia - the aftermath

Just to address the whole wines before their time comment, that was what I wanted. I have been buying Italian wines for the last two years, and the 2007, 2008, and to some extent 2006 Morgon are big curiosities for me because I don't taste them regularly in the course of work. And it was my birthday, so I got to make decisions like that.

I was being a faux old wine Nazi and it didn't quite come off.

I love Morgonotopia for a birthday.

Glad you had a good birthday, Levi.

The torn label on the 1969 said, I think, that the maker was "La Societe de S..." and Joe D thought it was a special bottling for the INAO.

My faves were: 06 Brun (flowers and steel), MMVII Lapierre (taut and nervy), 07 Descombes (just wow), 06 Desvignes Jav (great texture and balance), and top honors to 08 Foillard Py (just wow).

The Corcelette is very, very fragrant but, like the Chamonard, it ran away too quickly when drunk. (By which I mean I found it watery and mild, not that I gulped it down.)

The WTF award goes to the 02 Burgaud. That was mightily, and peculiarly, stinky.

It was a great learning experience to try the different vintages and the wines of the different makers, all side by side and in such profusion.

Thank you, Levi, for a splendid evening.

I found the 2005 Savoye Cote du Py VV a bit long in the tooth six months ago.

blasphemy.

Despite being a Morgaholic, I've shied away from the Savoye available at Chambers (the "fut de chene") because it trumpeth like a strumpeth the oak in the name.

I take it this is no deterrent, so will give one a try, but is it old oak, just meant for greater natural microoxigenation?

I worried about this a bit myself, but took the plunge on the Savoye Fut de Chene yesterday -- recognizing that my judgment might still be clouded by Levi-induced Morgonophoria. I will try to report back when I open one.

Do it yourself Morgonotopia

Andre Clouet
NV Brut

This was the the "1911" cuve, right?.

I can't find "1911" anywhere on the front or back label, so I am unsure.

From what I understand, one can tell from the old-style gold foil capsule and label.

Happy to take them off your hands.

There is no more Savoye estate, as Joe D explained to me near the Table of Morgon. Old man Savoye passed recently, and the son will sell the vineyards.

Fut de Chene on the label is often the move of the small time estate trying to add lustre to the product. I see it as quaint, and almost a throwback.

At the the end of the day we are talking about an excellent wine that costs $14.95 a bottle.

They say the 1999 is drinking beautifuly.

Outrage! I paid $3.04 /btl more than that.

Morgonotopia is already having an effect on market prices!

Expect the futures quotes for MMVII to skyrocket!

Wouldn't futures be for the MMVIII or MMIX. Also, isn't that the 'Cuvee Marcel'?

The MMVII is not yet available in the New York market. Thus the joke.

The bottle on the table in front of my couch says MMVII quite clearly on it, with no mention of Cuvee Marcel.

Ahhh, sorry, I was just going by what info I found via CellarTracker. Someone uploaded the picture below as being the 'Cuvee Marcel'. And I just noticed there that it was probably from Kermit Lynch's store.... Needless to say, I'm sure it will be a great white whale for the Chicago market and never show up here.

Expect and indictment from the SEC for market manipulation preceded by insider trading.

Neither the SEC nor the CFTC, AFAIK ....

I'm being told MMVIII will be arriving Feb 9th. Stop by on the 10th for a taste!

The Savoye VV has year in and year out been my favorite Beaujolais, it's great young but has a serious side and ages very well. The '99 VV is super, the barrel aged wine is also good but more astringent.

I'm very sad to hear this estate has come to an end with the death of the proprietor. We served the '95 at our wedding and I still have a few lying around somewhere. The number of bottles in the cellar that were made by people who have since passed away is growing at an alarming rate.

Ah well, cheers to Pierre Savoye!
