Where are those Texier,Sablet vines? From the picture the soil does not seem particularly phylloxera averse.

Not all self-rooted vines are grown in sandy soil. I believe that many of the examples in the Loire, for instance, are not.

"ric's very old ungrafted Grenache vines are located on the cteau just behind the ancient village of Sablet on a northwest-facing hillside."
 
This (on small limestone 'graves'-type pebbles from mountainside erosion, with sandy soil underneath), is the La Solana vineyard, planted in 1941 to ungrafted monastrell (mourvdre) at Casa Castillo in Jumilla - this is where the Casa Castillo Pie Franco wine comes from:

I'll give you a hint: it's zin.

Actually, I guess that's not much of a hint, since almost everything ungrafted in California is zin.

OK, it's north of Los Angeles. That should help!

In retrospect, though, I suppose including "ungrafted" American vines on American rootstocks isn't quite what Levi has in mind. Given 100-plus-year-old vines, I'm inclined to forgive myself, but oh well.

BTW - the pergola is about 6-foot-7 high, and so are the trunks of the 200 year-old vines.

Great picture, nice to see what produced the 07 & 06 vintages of a wine I'm having the pleasure of drinking now. Delicious.
