FX Pichler 2001 Loibner Berg Riesling Smaragd -- OMFG -- Ode on a Grecian Urn stuff

Not as persistant or electric as the '01 Kellerberg, but this is awesome. Shockingly lush and yet mineral-laden. The nose is beyond my powers of description -- lime leaf, lemon peel, sweet candle-wax, and then lots of wet, clean rocks. In the mouth, it is smooth and rich; really spreads over my tongue and cheeks; if there is no RS in this, it sure makes a good impersonation by virtue of ripeness; but there is NO flabbiness.

If you hate fruit in your dry riesling, this is not for you (but then again, ask yourself, do you really love riesling?). If you love fruit and minerality in some eternal pattern of strophe and antistrophe, this wine should be in your drinking rotation now and, I am guessing for the next 10 years; no doubt in mind that it would be delightful to re-visit in 20 years.

the 96 version of this wine blew away our Alsatian Riesling obsessed friends a year or two ago...a truly amazing wine
 
Wish I had some for now and the future. Unfortunately I drink through all my FX Pichler wines much too fast (polished off my last couple of bottles of '02 Steinertal Riesling a few months ago, which were fantastic).

And that was '96! Imagine what a '88, '93, '95, '97, '99 or '01 would do to that poor friend.

Hey! If you can't say anything nice...
We, I, both of us know Mark didn't mean anything nice. ZH plus some cab vintners here in the valley have a contract out on Mark. That's the reason he's gone back to night school to learn how to treat gunshot wounds. A nice guy but he can be a little "over the top" describing certain wines.

Must admit that as much as I dislike ZH I still like FX Pichler's stuff.
 
Yes, even the supercuvee'd M and Unendlich were pretty awesome when I had them, and if anything is going to offend like a Zind-Humbrecht you'd figure those would be the ones.

The '01 GV M was awesome out of magnum 12 months or so ago; still very young, but powerful, dense fruit wound around a rocky core just beginning to unfurl. Based on some old Wachau wines I've had this year, it wouldn't surprise me if that wine would live for 40 years or more.
