In praise of manufactured champagne

For some strange reason '95 La Grande Dame is affordably cheap at one of the airports I frequently pass through and after 4 bottles I'm convinced that there is a place for the large manufacturers in Champagne. I mean, I like Larmandier-Bernier, Andre Clouet, Jerome Prevost as much as the next wannabe hipster, but it's quite reassuring to pop some manufactured Champagne once in a while. Yes, I think the dosage might be slightly high, and yes it does smell a bit like it's been spoofulated but it is quite, quite delicious now. I guess there's no way I'll ever be a member of the Politburo, huh?

I will never be a member of the Politburo because I like Bollinger.

I mean, as much as I like any non-chenin wine with bubbles in it. Which ain't right, really.

It's OK, Chris. We can drink it together, and fuck the party leaders.

But if you actually want a second glass, don't invite Theresa.

It's okay Chris. You like Billiot, Selosse, Vilmart and Taittinger too so you'll probably just need a little reeducation. Wait, did I say Taittinger? I didn't mean it! Was that a knock my door?
