'99 Joly Coule de Serrant

drssouth

Stephen South
1999 Nicolas Joly Savennires-Coule de Serrant Clos de la Coule de Serrant, alc 13%...a little lanolin on the nose....soft with a touch of boytris on the palate...not showing much fruit...minimal acidity evident..seems a bit muted overall...
I am not very familiar with this producer....my guess is that more time is needed for it to show more completely

Or leave it open in the fridge for two weeks. Seriously, if you have any leftover give it a try.

Yes, usually has to be decanted 24 hours in advance. Any oxidative notes?

Not oxidative in any way..half the bottle remains, will try to let it "rest"

drank (or rather undrank) a bottle of 2004 a couple weeks ago. definitely not feeling it. even went back to it over the course of several days and no change. just flat and lifeless. personally, i think someone with access to that material should be delivering the goods on a much more consistent basis.

look, i'm glad joly is in the world, i'm just not so sure i'm glad his wine is. i'd say the wines for me bat around .500. great average for baseball. not for wine.

in fact, i've had better luck with cornelissen...

on the other hand, the 2004 Didier Dagueneau Buisson Renard we had that night was fantastic. apples and oranges, i suppose but it was a night of '04 loire whites and the joly couldn't even compete with the $12 wines.

Not sure how baseball stats are calculated, but the hits from Joly are homers, while the misses are truly ugly. Also better in really bad vintages, in my experience.

I used to buy a few bottles in most vintages to keep track of what he was doing.

I've concluded that it isn't so important for me to be well informed.

A couple of recent vintages have been heavily discounted ($40). Not sure what's going on there.

Picked up three 2005s at that price, not sure what's going on either. Will open one soon.

Please do report back-- I took a full case and sent them to deep storage.

2 weeksno peeking. If it's still lifeless than it probably will be forever. The wines are hit and miss and expensive but it's hard to argue with the '96. He knocked that one out of the park.

I saw the '04 here in Portland for $40. I was taken aback, wondering if it wasn't a mistake. Haven't seen that price for years. Guess that wasn't a mistake. I didn't buy, and maybe that wasn't a mistake either.
