2007 Occhipinti Nero d'Avola

Loved my first bottle of this last October, but others found brett in the second at the Who Needs Tuscany or Piedmont tasting two weeks ago. I was eager to try a third one in the sanctity of the home, with my own glasses, etc. Here my colleagues might have found brett too, as the aromas seemed the same, but Marcia and I must be genetically altered by Bacchus, may the chubby little bugger revel in peace. Dark sour cherry aromas, not giving much, give way to vibrant acidity, light tannins, pronounced salinity, and a taut and nervy sensation of stemminess. With food, it was balanced and pleasurable, with satisfying weight. Aromatically, should fulfil the promise in a year or so. The last 50ml, about twenty minutes after the buffering effect of food had faded, were surprisingly thin and acidic (not sure what that means, if anything).

This wine is going through it's heroin chic phase.

It can change radically with some time to sit.

Had a 2006 last night that was corked, but before the TCA came to the fore, it promised to be outrageously good. A damn shame.

Last bottle I had was fantastic, but the wine did go through a difficult period when it first hit the state.

Did Donati Lambrusco instead.

The 2006 and 2007 Siccagno are pretty different in relation to how they are drinking today, and also what might be more noticeable Brett in the 2007.

I found no brett in my recent bottles, just by the way.

A lurker writes to remind me that a recent European bottle of the Occhipinti Frappato was totally fucked with Brett. It's true, it was hideous.

Other bottles tasted in Europe in recent weeks were as clean and beautiful as the wine in NYC. I have to think that the one bottle had been mistreated somewhere along the chain.

There were some brett concerns with Occhipinti back with the '05. '06 seems to be brett free for both wines, so far as I could tell. In terms of the '07s, I really think it is the Frappato that folks should be drinking near term (not too say that it won't be beautiful with a bit of time, as well) while the Siccagno sorts out whatever is going on with it.

But that is just my take.

Actually, I had brett-enhanced versions of both the '06 Frappato and Siccagno. The latter much more marked than the former.

Oh, yes?

Interesting.

I've had bretty bottles of the 2006 nero. However, brett/reduction/VA can get confused on a perceptual, I think. Hopefully, not just by me.

The 2007 frappato was great from most bottles, glorious from some.
