2005 Clos Rougeard

'04 Poyeux is smashing. And honestly, the '05 is no slouch, but just buy some of the regular bottling instead.

Yes. By all means buy Poyeux. I have much more than regular Clos. That being said, my experiences over the last couple of years with bottles I've cellared has me re-thinking that strategy.

To me the Poyeux and Bourg are both vastly more interesting than the regular bottling, but the difference between Poyeux and Bourg may be more style than quality.

They are wildly different sites. The Clos is more like the Bourg than either are like Poyeux, IIRC. Very different creatures, splitting hairs of excellence.

Tried the '05 Bourg about a month back...beautiful wine and in need of an extended sleep in the cellar from here on in....just got to track some more down now...not a lot came into Australia.

Poyeux is an exceptional Loire red and a little funky, Bourg is Loire red dressed like a Bordeaux first growth (and gets away with it because it really is that good).

Yes, yes, yes, yes and yes.

Yes, the Bourg is really a Cheval Blanc wannabe. Nothing wrong with that, mind you. I foolishly drank my last '97 Poyeux in '08.

Maybe it's Bordeaux as you wish it were, but I think it still seems Saumur-ism to me. Maybe it's the Latour barrels that are influencing people.

Perhaps Sharon can confirm but I believe someone of note in France described the Bourg as the "best Cabernet Franc" ever made, or some such nonsensical hyperbole.

Yes, Bettane said it was the best Loire red that had ever been made.

Certain Disorderlies concurred, so listen up!

Bettane was specifically referring to the 1996 Le Bourg in his millennium list of greatest wines of the 20th century. For once can't say I disagree...

Greetings from Switzerland, David.
