Help for A Vegan in Paris

I told him it was time to get off that kick - but it's not happening. so I told my newly vegan friend, who is scheduled to fly out of DC to Paris with his wife on Wednesday (we'll see what the snow allows), I'd post here and ask for any restaurant suggestions.

He went 100% vegan at the beginning of the year - although he admitted that he isn't so strict that he'd refuse to drink a wine fined with egg whites!

So any suggestions would be welcome.

This might help (and this), though I admit a general lack of optimism. Vegetarian's hard enough. Vegan? Ugh.

I suspect the Breizh Cfe (109, rue Vieille du Temple in the Marais, 01 42 72 13 77), which is fantastic, uses animal fats to cook their crpes and their incomparable buckwheat galettes. But they don't use animal products to make the latter, at least (just water and flour), and if the cooking method can be identified and/or modified, it's possible that there are vegan options either on-menu or off-. They're very friendly, I'm pretty confident much of the staff speaks or at least understands English, and I'd definitely give it a shot. Hell, I said after eating there that I'd eat the buckwheat galettes plain...they were that good...so that's always an option. Incredible list of cider (and one poir, everyone knows from who), interesting wines, fun vibe.

Maureen, you should put your friend out of his misery. I recommend a Seine drowning or an Eiffel leap. He'll at least make the papers.

Let him drink Perrier until he founders.

I don't know about restaurants but it seems like they are prime candidates for supermarket shopping and cooking at home!

Why cook? Eat it raw!

Easier in the summer with tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce.

But they might get away with some radishes, and then of course have good fun chomping into beets.

came up with this Vegan Paris. Didn't look around too much, but seemed like it could offer a couple ideas. Good luck to your friend. The one time I went to Paris I was a vegetarian. I am very excited to be going back as a meat eater.

Here's another: Paris Veggie Joints.

Shit... Never mind... Just saw the links in Thor's post. Same ones. Great minds, eh?

Much too kind for the demise of a vegan.

LOL! I was going to copy the responses into an email and send them on but now I'm not so sure.

He started down the vegan road last summer - he and his wife and I were talking and he invited me over for dinner - and his wife said, don't worry I'll add something you and I can eat.

He made a vegan pasta - and it was actually quite good. But how often can you do that?

And I know he plans to eat at Arpege so he's apparently going to break the rules a bit.

Its not all lentil burgers and brown rice. There's some people trying to do some creative things with vegan food. Millenium in SF comes to mind.
