Have you been to Ubuntu?

My wife and I love that place.

That's good to hear. I haven't been there yet, but had an outstanding dinner prepared by Jeremy when he was sous chef at Manresa.

Mark, Scott and whoever else is reading,
That is a place we would love to go, anytime. If you are in the Napa/Sonoma area, and we are, we'll meet you there.
I have them on speed dial.
Truly inspired food.
Best, Jim

Name the date. It's a good excuse to visit a client.

I'll make reservations if you tell me how many are in your party.

Me +1. Great! Looking forward to it.

I love that this thread turned out to champion the at-first reviled practice of veganism/vegetarianism. I think I'll start a thread on hipster wines and see where it goes. We might have a jeebus partway through.

I'd go after hipster wine importers. More provocative.

That sounds like a good idea. Especially if you want to set up the Jeebus in Paris around, say, April 19, 20 or 21. I know at least two people who would be there.

From what I heard, Tan Dinh's cellar was pretty much pillaged in the mid-80s when one could get 10 francs/US dollar.

I was lucky enough to go there in '83 before the hordes descended. David Russell and I managed to do a fair amount of damage over one lunch and one dinner.

You're going to be back in CA by that date? We would like to join you, counting on you to order for us the dishes we must have missed the last time we were there. Sadly we'll not be back from Palm Springs area until the 1st of March. Speaking of eating, the desert area, 100s of at best mediocre restaurants.

Lou,
I'll be in Sonoma through March 6th - give me a call when you get back (I will NOT have computer or e-mail access). If you don't have my cell, send me a PM.
Best, Jim

There were still gems into the early to mid 90s, whence I came to it.

Last time, in 2003 or so, there wasn't much left.

It was glorious while it lasted.

I hit Tan Dinh in very early 1998 and I'd say the list was pretty well picked over - and the food just okay I thought.

by the way - saw my friend and his wife driving by my house this afternoon (supposed to have gone to Paris yesterday) - not sure what's happening. I think she had a business reason to be there (she's the head of Justice antitrust division - some big antitrust thing I guess) so I suspect they are going tomorrow.

pardon the unskilled copying and pasting - but this captures theproblem with vegans!!!

No, Maureen, the problem with vegans is that it's just too much effort to tenderize them sufficiently -- that, and they just taste like chicken. [insert emoticon here]
