Thankfully, I found a princess.

1992 Sullivan, Coeur de Vigne:
80% cabernet sauvignon and 20% merlot, 13.2% alcohol; this has a smoky, fruit nose with a resolved fruit and smoke palate, lots of structure and a pretty good finish. But it has a slight note of mercaptan playing in the background that is enough to distract but insufficient to destroy. Not something to seek out.

1999 Girardin, Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses:
Muddled on the nose and palate without any Chambolle character; still, good with meat-loaf and corn. Its intense, concentrated and pretty well balanced but it could be from anywhere and when one is buying Amoureuses, that is unacceptable.

1999 Barthod, Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras:
Much like the foregoing wine; lots of concentration and intensity but muddy, characterless and a bit hard. Okay with food but this is disappointing.

1996 Jol Taluau, St.Nicolas-de-Bourgueil VV:
Sandalwood, fading flowers, red fruit and just a hint of dried herb; visceral in the mouth with juicy flavors that echo the nose, a musky, slightly rustic overall delivery and a 1500 thread count texture; smooth, mouth-watering finish. I never had a better cabernet franc.

Best, Jim

Joe Dougherty or Lou A. will have to confirm, but I believe we had this last week in Saumur. After a pair of outstanding older magnums of Filliatreau (1989 nosing out 1990, fruitier), the Taluau Saint-Nicolas seemed a little frayed and tired. We had no trouble downing it, though.

I envy you the depth of your experience.

Do I assume that these are from a case and that you have had previous bottles of both? And that neither wine was as disappointing or characterless in the past?

Are you trying to start a thread count war? Or contribute to thread count inflation? My next smoothie will have to be upped to 2000...

You test my memory . . .
I think I have had both once before and, in each instance, thought them closed. But I have no clear recollection.

Yes, closed sounds plausible. Was just wondering.

Yes, that was it. It did seem further along than a bottle or two in NYC.

So I've got to hang on to my '02 for six more years then?

Thanks for your continued trials of '99 red burgundy, Jim. I will open one tonight to toast you for what seems, so far, a fruitless journey.

I've got one in the queue - so you may want to wait until at least then.
Best, Jim

I'm curious. I stopped buying as things changed at the domain. My bottle or two of the 1996 is all I have left.

Had the '02 last week, it was blocky and not in a great place.

Anyone tried the 89 domaine? I noticed K&L has a pile of them in mags for a qood price.
