01 or 02 Huet petillant for current drinking?

Slaton Lipscomb
Choosing between '01 and 2nd release of '02 Huet petillant to open tonight. Anyone drank both of these recently? I seem to recall someone suggesting the '02 2nd release is more backwards than the 1st release and in need of time.

I don't know why, but none of my bottles from the 2nd release batch have shown nearly as well as any of the ones from the 1st. I'd prefer the '01.

I've still not tasted the 2nd release. Unless it was the version we had in Vouvray with less dosage --- SFJoe ??

They didn't wind up doing that version.

No, the experimental non-dose '02. The reserve '02 is still en tirage.

The '01 was very nice last night. Not as deep and nuanced and just compulsively drinkable as the '02 first release, but more balanced and less aggressively wooly than previous bottles I've had of '01.

You guys are torturing me, right?

When .sasha & Co. visited, they were thinking about a non-dose release of 2002, but later decided against it.

SB, you'd have liked it, it was a little aldehydic and very lean.

We had a first-bottling 02 on Friday to celebrate my son's birthday (also 02 vintage). It was extremely good, best of this I've had yet, approaching sublime with chevre aux fines herbs (sp?) on crackers. As a Vouvray naif, I have difficulty envisioning how much better this wine can become with age, though I hear it's supposed to improve considerably.

The second bottling sample I've tasted is distinctly less expressive, but promising. David Lillie told me that the second batch should be less evolved.

If it's a special occasion, I would open the 02; or if you are serving rich or salty food that would pair especially well with it. If you just want to enjoy some fizz, I'd go with the 01 - though I admit I've never tasted the 01.
