But, this wine made me stop and forced me to post. I opened it Thursday night and it seemed a bit too austere for my taste; very dense and great potential, but not yielding or supple. Vacu-vin stoppered it until this evening, and it's just perfect. Sometimes I've found Stefan's wines to be a bit heavy, but never doubted his ability to get profound flavor into the bottle, and, to be fair, those were from riper vintages (e.g., '03, '05 & '07). This wine is beautiful: orange blossom and peel on the nose with beautiful minerality, like a rain water on rocks; some other haunting white flower/fraise de bois notes floating behind. It is so nimble and yet full in the mouth; just dances around the front, top and back of the mouth; great refreshing, mouthwatering acidity at the end carries the whole thing down the back of my tongue and --when i can resist immediately taking another sip -- lingers for a very nice long time (with that hint of strawberry).

Gosh, these are going to be fun over the next years (decades?) -- assuming the stelvin doesn't screw (ha ha) that up.
 
Awesome - I had no idea Meulenhof had started using screwcaps!

Love the wines from that estate, do not buy them often enough but I've resolved to do something about that after a freaking amazing bottle of the 2001 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese I had last night from David Bueker's cellar.

BTW, have you had the '06 Erdener Treppchen Kabinett* (yes, one star)? Ridiculously ripe, more like an Auslese than Kabinett - not surprising given the vintage - but that was a phenomenal wine with amazing balance, and one I really did not buy enough of given the cost.

I had the ET '01 Aus earlier this week; thought it was very good, but not great; a bit clumsy, especially given how good the vintage was for other in the neighborhood.

I have not; as far as I can tell, I bought no '06 Meulenhof.
 
I've loved these wines for awhile - well, every since the 98 ET Spatlese demonstrated to me that german riesling can taste like strawberries!

But Kirk if you love that 08 now - drink more sooner rather than later.

BTW, as I read your description of the wine I thought Loosen's 07 WS Kabinett - have you had that wine?

Instructions received. (but i thought maybe that it seemed to need 2 days to open up might mean that 1 or 2 years of age might help it.)

and no, i haven't had the Loosen WS kab; but every WS '07 i have had, (JJPrum, willi S., S-O) seem to be just great, so wouldn't surprise that Loosen is too.
