What's your favorite wine from the VOS Portfolio (Victor O. Schwartz)

I think it's the time of year to turn our minds to Kiddush Hashem Cellars. I am a particular fan of their Syrah from the Great Oaks Ranch Vineyard.

i assume this is some sort of joke post, but i like berthet-bondet vin de paille and christophe pacalet. that's all i can think of...

Great Oaks Ranch is also known for its horses, cows, and lavender and is owned by Michael Lippman, an music industry heavyweight (such as they are these days) who has escaped the hustle and bustle of the city by escaping to California's scenic Santa Ynez Valley. In exchange for piece of mind, he has seemingly lost the ability to proofread his website, as the site's copywriter doesn't seem have a firm grasp on the difference between plural word's (non-apostrophic) and posessive words (eg: with apostrophe's). Regardless of punctuation flaws, the wines are relatively competitively for the area, but I don't think that they're sold by VOS.

But speaking of the wineries at VOS that I do like, the trio of Austrian wineries they bring in (Judith Beck, Kollwentz, and Rainer Wess) are all high quality and taste good. In their Spanish section both Via Saturnia and Pago de los Capellanes are worthy of drinking on a semi-regular basis, and I like the Topanga Vineyards wines (Grenache Blanc in particular) not only because they drink well but because they're just down the road from me.

So Joe, I guess the answer to your question "What are your favorite wines from this stellar book?" would be that I don't really have "favorites", but that there are "a number of wines" there that I like to drink. How about you?

-Eden (I've been told that the Kiddush Hashem winemaker is a real rabbi so would that make his Syrah double-kosher?)

That's a big, eclectic, and uneven list, but I can find enough producers I like, e.g., Jean Chauvenet, Schmitt's Kinder, Schmitges, Courbis, Galantin, so that if you let me loose in the warehouse, I'd come out happy.

A later thought: with a list like that, are they really acting as importers (i.e., stocking all the wines) or are they just acting as a broker?

Good question. Crazy range.

I also really like the wines of Chauvenet, although they are sometimes chewier even than Gouges.

I know VOS is only in the NY/NJ area, but it's still interesting that I can only recognize one producer from that list that I'm sure is in the Michigan market where I live - Haut Rian.

I do usually get to the city at least once/year though. Not too long ago I drank my one and only bottle of '93 Bouley Beaune Reversees and found it to be pretty ordinary stuff.
