Where should I go?

You think ours aren't?

What do they have in February?

Cold storage apples and potatoes?

If you want year-round farmers market bounty it has to be the Bay Area.

What sort of hunting is available? I'm an upland bird man myself.

Well, never been a hunter myself, but we have seasons for deer, of course,
(Hell, they're right in my yard, but that'd be too easy), turkey, and I'm
sure pheasant and other game birds if you can find them (pheasant I've seen, but not sure about grouse), goose and duck.

R1 Universities?Rochester and Syracuse? Is Cornell considered upstate?

"Upstate" has too many different meanings with respect to New York to be a useful geographical term, but Cornell is certainly in western central New York State. The Cornell medical school/center, though, is in New York City if you're looking for medical research centers.

Best oysters ever. Mmmmmmushrooms, of many kinds. All kinds of root veggies and squashes. Cider. And a bunch of non-seasonal stuff, like hams and cheeses and jellies.

Well, maybe the January oysters are a little better.

All of that in the Bay Area in February. Plus the dizzying array of citrus fruits that make my eyes bleed. Dates and persimmons as well, although the season for those starts to end around that time.

Don't really know.

Cornell is most definately Upstate...smack dab, as it were.

What is R1, btw? (I'm assuming top-tier research, but what do I know -
I drink grenache?!)

It stands for "Research 1" from the Carnegie Classification, which covers institutions of higher education. You can look up the details, but yes, it's essentially the top-tier research institutions. There's a whole list of conditions such as they have to grant Ph.D.s, be of a certain size, etc.
