Lyon recommendations

Looking for a moderately-priced hotel with fairly good-sized rooms in Lyon. Any suggestions? Alternatively, which neighborhoods would you recommend to stay/hang out in?

Thanks in advance...

Globe et Cecil

One of the very best old school hotels, fairly priced.

I'll leave to ric and other knowledgeable locals to offer suggestions of hotels, but for area I'd suggest something fairly proximate to the old city, as that offers not only some of the best touristic opportunities but also puts you within walking distance of some good restaurants and interesting wine shops.

Isn't Ampuis nearby? Lots of nice places to hang around there.

Thanks everyone, but alas this isn't for me, but a friend with only mild interest in wine. Eric, Mark, Rahsaan (Sharon?) - are there other fun neighborhoods in addition to the old city for cafe's, bars, clubs, shops, etc.? Croix Rousse sounds intriguing on a few websites but I really know nothing of Lyon.

Lyon is great and you should absolutely get up to La Croix Rousse. Also, seriously, get a guide that lists the traboules in the old city.

Another hotel to consider is Htel des Artistes, which is on a cute quiet square overlooking an 18th century theater.

Yes, we've stayed there on several occasions and I can second your recommendation. I decided not to recommend it myself, though, because Xian was looking for spacious rooms, which is not how I would describe those at des Artistes. Place des Celestins, however, is very nice, very quiet and quite conveniently located.
