TN: Soul Flavors (3/12/10)

Attendees: Jay, Chris, Lisa, Jeff

Rain and darkness (well, it is night) but Soul Flavors can always rustle up something yummy. Chris and I vow to order something other than the short rib; he goes for the almond-crusted Chilean sea bass and I go for the buttermilk-soaked fried chicken. Jay and Lisa plunk for sofrito-marinated rib eye steak.

Chit-chat ranges widely, as is customary. And there was wine, which is also customary:

Red Hook Winery 2008 Sauvignon Blanc, Jamesport Vineyard - A model of the urban winery, this project by Mark Snyder, Bob Foley (of Robert Foley) and Abe Schoener (of Scholium Project) works with fruit from Long Island. There are several varietals and blends but the total output of the project is around 500 cases. One of the two stores which offer the wine is near my house. This was one of Abe's. Somewhat cloudy, citrusy, orange-minty, definitely hipster (low sulfur, slightly 'orange'), doesn't really strike me as sauvignon blanc, "has the look and smell of a Puzelat wine"-Chris. Interesting but not really anybody's cup of tea.

Huet 2002 Vouvray Demi-Sec "Le Haut Lieu" - green plums, bright acidity, just a bit of wax, but pretty much shut down.

Cazin 1996 Cour-Cheverney "Cuvee Renaissance" Vendange Manuelles - an old friend, pear, quince, and sweetened kumquats, warm and zingy; how many of these have we had?

Dom. Lafouge 2007 Auxey-Duresses 1er "Les Duresses" - I am so glad I went back to Chambers to get more of this one. Pretty, cherry fruit, a delicate dustiness in the finish

Dom. Dujac 2007 Charmes-Chambertin GC - Entirely unplanned, Jay and I both brought 07 Burgundy. The wine is raspy and tannic and not much fun, but see the separate note posted by Jay.

Ridge 2007 Montebello - Young and virile, fairly restrained use of oak, only a whiff of coconut, this is more like the '06 than the (disastrous) '05; in fact, with the steak, it's really the thing

Sounds like this is drinking well even though Lafouge is usually not the most forward producer. I thought of buying some of the 07 Climat du Val but maybe that is more backwards than this one?

Thanks Jeff those wines sound fun. What miserable weather - and even worse on Saturday.

Hey Chris (hoping you are lurking) what's going on with the 95 Montebello these days?
Still tannic and tight? Or... closer to ready?

You're the guy I trust when it comes to monty.
