2002 Roty Ros

I was intrigued when I saw a bottle of 2002 Joseph Roty Marsannay Ros in the store but suffered a predictable letdown upon opening when I tasted the sour funky metallic mess. Yes, it seemed like the wine had seen better days.

But, after letting it chill down further it began to firm up and offer a few glasses of pleasure. One could almost sense the pinot noir fruit underneath all the sour metal but at this point most of that fruit has gone tart and fading. So yes, a few interesting sips but for the most part it has indeed seen better days.

Wow. Who was still selling this stuff and why?

$5.99 at MacArthurs. They also had the 01 at the same price, but I figured this was the 'safe' choice.

I also bought some 'real' wine.

Too bad. Sometimes things are good when they're older than they're supposed to be. But my experience with Roty in general has been a mixed bag.

I bought a 2004 Roty rose last year and it was still tight. I was surprised how much it evolved when I tried another one this year. Now I'm wondering if it will make it to next summer.
The 2002s were supposedly drinking splendidly last year, according to a discussion I had on eBob.
It is pretty tasty stuff.

This was in a bargain bin, so who knows what had happened to it. I certainly don't think 6 years is too long for rose in principle, but it (obviously) depends on the rose and I don't have previous experience with Roty's.

I would be happy to be drinking the 2000 still, which I bought on close-out, except that I finished the last of that case two years ago.

Good to hear there's no rush to drink my 2004s, even if it wasn't a great vintage. At least for reds. It was a good vintage for whites. How good was it for pinot noir for rose?

The difference in the 2004 Roty Rose was great, though, between summer 2007 and summer 2008. It blossomed into a nice wine, where as last year it was still tight after three or four hours.
