Californina Merlot

Californina MerlotSo a friend has friends visiting from Switzerland. They like oaky California Merlot, the Noodle bless their little Swiss hearts, and want to get some while they're here. Apparently they didn't get the memo.

Anyhow, I haven't tasted any in a decade, but can any of the retailers or others with broader experience than mine suggest a nice, slick, vulgarly oaky merlot to me, and maybe also tell me where to send them in NYC to buy it?

if it makes you feel any better, they can find exactly what they are looking for, in Austria

My colleague tells me that he is having the Swiss over for dinner, and that he will drink the merlot with them.

I told him to do the Nixon.

The Beringer individual vineyard stuff should be available in NY and is oaky but not undrinkable. Some people had us over to dinner last night and served us a Napa Merlot that they were so proud of that tasted to us like green bell peppers on steriods. I will not mention the name. Everybody loved it, we just sat and nodded knowingly but silently. Good luck this evening.

I thought green bell peppers were a forbidden flavor out your way.

I didn't realize you were directionally challenged? Sorry for your misfortune.

Apparently they didn't get the memo.

I said the same thing all during today's lunch, which was at a Friendly's along the highway.

Everything on the menu was advertised in terms of size and sweetness. It was like a caricature of poor health! But you really have to credit these places for finding new and inventive ways to sneak sugary sauces and toppings onto supposedly-savory dishes..

And bravo to Sharon, although I really hope that was creative license and not an actual quote..

I agree with seth about the yorkville and sutton stuff. I also dont mind the Caparone merlot from Paso Robles. retails around 20 if i remember right. Might not actually be what they are looking for though, it has a little more funk running through it than a really straight forward wine from said place and style.

so, what did you go with?
Me? Are you kidding? I am not the agreeable guy that my friend is. I couldn't go near that stuff no matter how much I liked the guests.
