dissapointing wines, nice cocktails

1987 Caymus Zin showed nothing like the lovely bottle Greg opened about 2 years ago at PDH. It was pleasant enough, no overt oak or extraction but a bit bland.

2003 Trimbach Clos Ste. Hune suffered from 2003itis. Heavy, clunky, and leaden are not usually terms I use to describe CSH but they applied here. Ah, well.

Braeburn had 2 very nice cocktails, the Braeburn Champagne Cocktail with an amazing rich spicey/bittery/appley nose and the Tangerine with a less impressive nose but lovely complex flavors. BTW - I wholeheartedly recommend their Rhode Island Squid with green olives, piquillo pepper and meyer lemon but do not recommend the Housemade Papardelle with mushrooms, parmesan and black truffle butter.

So these squid are caught off of Rhode Island?

Quick google search tells me that some of the best East Coast squid can be found there. I never knew.

Just so.

I can enthusiastically recommend both the Hand-Rolled Ricotta Pasta with braised rabbit, bitter greens, mint, and parmesan (...gentle and soothing, the bitterness and mintiness are well-behaved) and the Breast of Long Island Duck with glazed kohlrabi, duck confit, brandied prune and apple puree (...silky, slightly smoky, tender meat (accompaniments are a bit lame but who cares?)).

Where the Portuguese settle, tasty cephalopods can't be far behind.
