I certainly would not describe the fruit and acid as "modernized" on a 2005 drunk a few days ago. Perhaps this impression of the 2007 is driven by the vintage, rather than modernized winemaking?

Could be, but there was discernible wood and it was too ripe for what I think an old-fashioned Barbera should be, so that was the least inappropriate box.

Well, not to mention that part of the exercise was satirical, perhaps testing my own desire for order in an intractable wine universe, paerhaps making people pine for old fashioned tasting notes...

Been to her cellar? Not much "modernizing" going on there. I think it's the vintage.

I was there five months ago, and saw new barrels that had to be washed with steam and brine to remove the vanillin effect, but maybe that only goes so far. Neither the Massolino nor the Conterno had any oak taste, though they were hotter.
